Wednesdays

No Wednesday games for now...If you would be interested in a Swiss Team Game or a Limited Pairs Game (499er, 299er, 199er, etc.) or a Limited Swiss Team Game, or any other type of game on Wednesday evenings, please speak to me (Doug) about it.  Or also please feel free to email me (dough0918@aol.com) or phone me (925:938-4493) about it (or about anything else really).  if I can sense there is enough interest in a Wednesday game to make it work, we could certainly have one.

NO WEDNESDAY GAMES FOR NOW...

RESULTS FROM MONDAY NIGHT'S (FEBRUARY 24) GAME ARE POSTED, AS USUAL, IN THE FAR LEFT COLUMN @ 11:30 pm.  WE ARE STILL IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING CAUGHT UP W/ OUR NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS (BLOGS)...WE SHOULD HAVE ONE FOR THIS WEEK'S GAME W/IN THE NEXT WEEK OR TWO, AFTER WHICH WE'LL BE CAUGHT UP.

CURRENTLY TYPING WHAT FOLLOWS BELOW THE EVENING OF SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 23, THE DAY BEFORE OUR LAST GAME OF THIS MONTH (JUST NOW SCORED AND POSTED TO THE LEFT, AS MENTIONED ABOVE.  PICKING UP OUR NARRATIVE, WE ARE NOW READY TO BLOG ON A COUPLE MORE GAMES, FIRST, THE LAST GAME OF LAST MONTH, JANUARY 27

IN THE 499er GAME IT WAS A TALE OF WILDLY DIFFERENT SCORING PATTERNS IN EITHER DIRECTION.  N/S, 2 PAIRS DOMINATED AND RAN AWAY FROM THE FIELD, EACH BETTERING THE 65% MARK, WHEREAS NONE OF THE OTHER 4 PAIRS ACHIEVED EVEN 50%, ALTHOUGH 2 OF THOSE ACTUALLY ALSO SCRATCHED.  GAY and PEGGY MANAGED THE WIN BY THE SLIM MARGIN OF A SINGLE MATCHPOINT, SCORING 53.5 (AVERAGE WAS 40, SO THIS TRANSLATED HUGELY INTO A 67% GAME).  ALMOST AS GOOD WERE 2nd PLACERS KAREN and JERRY WHOSE 52.5 WAS 66%.  THIS MADE FOR A MarginOfVictory OF 1/4 OF A BOARD.  AFTER THEM THERE WAS A VERY LARGE DISTANCE ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE NEXT 2 PAIRS, BC (BONNIE) and BILL ALONG W/ HELEN and AMA, EACH OF WHOM SCORED 37 (46%) TO TIE FOR 2nd/3rd PLACE IN STRAT B.  THE 15.5 MATCHPOINT GAP BETWEEN THE 2nd PLACE PAIR AND THESE TWO TYING PAIRS REPRESENTED ALMOST 4 FULL BOARDS...QUITE REMARKABLE, TO SAY THE LEAST, BUT PROPS TO ALL WHO MANAGED TO SCRATCH AMIDST IT ALL.

E/W PROVED TO BE A MUCH TIGHTER, MORE CLOSELY BUNCHED FIELD.  HELENE and JOHN RACKED UP THEIR BEST GAME AND 1st WIN IN MORE THAN 2 MONTHS, SINCE THE MONDAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING, W/ A SCORE OF 45.5 (57%).  GETTING 2nd PLACE WERE ARNITA and ELAINE W/ 43.5 (54%).  MOV WAS EXACTLY 1/2 A BOARD.  3 PAIRS WERE ABOVE 50%, 3 BELOW.  DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIGHEST AND LOWEST E/W SCORES WAS ONLY 11 MATCHPOINTS.  N/S THE DIFFERENCE WAS MORE THAN DOUBLE THAT AMOUNT, 24 MATCHPOINTS.

IN THE OPEN GAME SCORING PATTERN WAS MUCH MORE SIMILAR TO THAT OF N/S PAIRS IN THE 499er GAME THAN TO THAT OF THE E/W PAIRS THERE.  HOWEVER THIS TIME IT WAS ONLY ONE PAIR THAT RAN AWAY FROM THE REST OF THE FIELD, RATHER THAN 2.  THAT PAIR WAS PRAKASH and GISH WHO PUT UP THE VERY BEST PERCENTAGE-SCORE IN THE ROOM ON THIS NIGHT, W/ A 51 (AVERAGE WAS 36, THEREFORE A WHOPPING 71%!)  WHOO-IE, WELL DONE FELLAS.  MORE THAN 10 POINTS BEHIND THE WINNERS WERE JIM K. and BLAIR WHO TOOK 2nd PLACE W/ A 41 (57%), A NICE GAME, YET JUST UNDER 3 1/2 BOARDS REMOVED.  DONNA ROLLE and DAVEY C. (CARTWRIGHT) TOOK 3rd PLACE W/ A SCORE OF 39 (54%).  LO-IE (LOIS) and JIM S. WERE JUST A TICK FURTHER BACK IN 4th PLACE W/ A 38 (53%).  ALSO SCRATCING WERE AMY and LISA WHOSE 35 (49%) WAS GOOD FOR 1st PLACE IN STRAT C.  WELL DONE ALL...

MOVING AHEAD NOW INTO THE GAME OF FEBRUARY 3, IN THE 499er, N/S SCORES WERE AGAIN MUCH HIGHER (AND MUCH LOWER) THAN THOSE OF E/W.  THIS TIME J-NICE (JANIS) and BOB J. RETURNED TO THEIR WINNING WAYS W/ A GI-NORMOUS NUMBER, 54 (AVERAGE WAS 40, THUS 67.5%), BEST PERCENTAGE-SCORE IN THE ROOM, BY A RATHER HEALTHY MARGIN IN FACT.  ONLY OTHER PAIR IN THE ROOM IN THE 60% OR BETTER RANGE WAS 2nd PLACERS HERE, KAREN and JERRY, BASICALLY REPRISING THEIR GAME OF THE PREVIOUS WEEK, THIS TIME SCORING 48 (EXACTLY 60%), NOT QUITE AS SMASHING AS A WEEK AGO, YET STILL MORE THAN GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN ON MANY NIGHTS, JUST NOT ON THIS ONE.  OH, BTW, THAT MOV WAS A HEALTHY 1 1/2 BOARDS, PRETTY GOOD OVER A PAIR THAT SCORED 60%!

E/W, AGAIN MUCH MORE TIGHTLY KNIT, MORE CLOSELY COMPETITIVE (FOR WHATEVER RANDOM REASON) WAS (ALSO AGAIN) WON BY HELENE and JOHN, UNBEKNOWNST TO US ALL AT THE TIME, BUT THUS BUILDING ONE OF THEIR PATENTED HOT STREAKS (WE KNOW THIS NOW, WRITING NEARLY 3 WEEKS LATER).  THEY PUT UP A SCORE OF 44.5 (56%).  ARTHUR and TOM PERSEVERED FOR 2nd PLACE, W/ 42 (52.5%).  MOV PROVED TO BE 5/8 OF A BOARD.  AGAIN, DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIGHEST AND LOWEST SCORES IN THIS DIRECTION WAS A MERE 8 MATCHPOINTS.  WHEREAS N/S IT WAS A HEALTHY 22 MATCHPOINTS, NEARLY 3 TIMES LARGER.  RHYME, REASON???  NOT OBVIOUS TO THIS OBSERVER, BUT WE'LL SURELY KEEP A WATCH ON THIS INTERESTING TREND.

IN THE OPEN GAME, AGAIN, THINGS MUCH TIGHTER, AT LEAST AT THE TOP, W/ THE HIGHEST-SCORING 3 PAIRS FINISHING SEPARATED BY ONLY THE SLIMEST, MEASLE .5 (1/2) MATCHPOINT EACH. THE DOS (COURTENAY and ANDY) ESCAPED FROM THIS DOG-FIGHT W/ THE WIN VIA A SCORE OF 56.5 (AVERAGE WAS 48, THUS 58.85%).  HOT ON THEIR HEELS BUT FINISHING 2nd WERE ANNE and SIDNEY; 56 SCORE WAS 58.33%.  MOV A MERE 1/8 OF A BOARD.  3rd PLACE, A FINE RESULT FOR FIRST TIME PARTNERSHIP (OR SO I BELIEVE) OF LISA and DAVID G., 55.5 SCORE BEING 57.81%.  4th PLACE WERE (JOHN EI) DINGER and (DAVE) PRATT W/ SCORE OF EVEN 50 (52%).  AND SO IT WENT ON THIS NIGHT.

AS ALWAYS, MANY, MANY THANKS (AGAIN AND OF COURSE) TO ALL WHO CAME TO PLAY ON THESE (AND ALL) NIGHTS.  ALSO CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO MANAGED TO PAIR LADY LUCK W/ GOOD TECHNIQUE AND THUS SCRATCH.    TILL TOMORROW EVENING THEN...

RESULTS FROM TONIGHT'S (FEBRUARY 17) GAME ARE POSTED IN THE FAR LEFT COLUMN, AS USUAL, @11:10 pm.  NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS (BLOG) WILL FOLLOW AS WE CONTINUE ALONG OUR "CATCH UP" TOUR.  LAST NIGHT I GOT US UP THROUGH AND INCLUDING JANUARY 20.  W/ ANY LUCK THIS WEEK I CAN GET 3 OR 4 IN AND GET US INTO FEBRUARY AND PRETTY CLOSE TO BEING TOTALLY CAUGHT UP.  WATCH FOR IT IN THE COLUMN TO THE LEFT OF THIS ONE.  FOR NOW WE'LL LEAVE BELOW THE BLOG WE WROTE JUST LAST NIGHT.  AFTER ALL, GOTTA LEAVE IT UP AND GIVE FOLKS A CHANCE TO READ IT...THANKS MUCH, AS ALWAYS, FOR YOUR PATIENCE...

SO NOW IT IS SUNDAY EVENING FEBRUARY 16 AS WE TYPE, AND WE RESUME TRYING TO CATCH UP W/ OUR NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS (BLOGS).  IN THE COLUMN TO THE LEFT LAST WEEK WE STARTED THE CATCH UP W/ LAST GAME OF DECEMBER (2019) AND FIRST GAME IN JANUARY (2020)...NOW WE WILL MOVE ALONG TO JANUARY 13 GAME.

IN THE 499er GAME, N/S, MELINDA and MIKE STARTED A PATTERN FOR THE EVENING, BY NOT ONLY WINNING BUT BY SMOKING MOST OF THE REST OF THE FIELD W/ A BIG GAME.  IN WHAT I THINK WAS THEIR FIRST WIN TOGETHER, THEY SCORED 51 (AVERAGE WAS 40, SO THIS PROVED TO BE 64%).  NEXT BEST AND ONLY OTHER N/S PAIR TO EITHER SCRATCH OR TO BE ABOVE AVERAGE (THEY ACCOMPLISHED BOTH) WERE JOY and BOB SCHENKER, WONDERFUL RETURNEES FROM LONG AGO; SO GOOD TO SEE YOU BOTH; THEY LAST PLAYED W/ US FOR SEVERAL MONTHS IN 2015, ABOUT 4 1/2 YEARS AGO!!!  WELCOME BACK...ON THIS NIGHT THEY TOOK 2nd PLACE W/ A SCORE OF 42 (53%).  WINNERS M and M THUS ENJOYED A MarginOfVictory OF 2 1/4 BOARDS.  WELL DONE ALL.

E/W WINNERS ELAINE and ARNITA CONTINUED THE PATTERN OF SMOKING THE FIELD AND IN FACT PUT UP THE BEST PERCENTAGE SCORE IN THE ROOM, TALLYING 55 (69%).  NEXT BEST AND EARNING 2nd PLACE WERE LINDA and CONNIE, SCORING 43 (54%).  WINNERS E andHAD A WHOPPING MOV OF 3 FULL BOARDS!  ALSO WELL DONE.

MOVING TO THE OPEN GAME, THE WINNERS AGAIN WERE NOT MUCH THREATENED, BUT AT LEAST THE MOV WAS CLOSER.  GLENN and DAVID G. SCORED THEIR 2nd CONSECUTIVE WIN AND WERE 2nd PLACE THE WEEK BEFORE THAT,THIS TIME W/ A 62 (AVERAGE WAS 48, SO THIS WAS 65%).  ALMOST W/IN SHOUTING DISTANCE AND IN 2nd PLACE WERE ANNE and SIDNEY W/ A SCORE OF 56.5 (59%), CONTINUING THEIR STRING OF FINE PERFORMANCES.  MOV WAS JUST UNDER 1 1/2 BOARDS.  ALSO SCRATCHING WERE PRAKASH and GISH IN 3rd PLACE W/ A SCORE OF 54 (56.25%); ALSO BLAIR and JIM K., JUST A SHADE FURTHER BACK IN 4th PLACE W/ A SCORE OF 53.9 (56.15%); AND ALSO LISA and LAURA WHO TOOK 1st PLACE IN STRAT C W/ A SCORE OF 47 (49%).

LET'S ALSO SQUEEZE IN HERE RESULTS FROM THE SUBSEQUENT WEEK, JANUARY 20, WHEN WE CHOSE TO CELEBRATE MLK DAY W/ A NICE EVENING BRIDGE GAME.  IN THE 499er, LONG-TIME PARTNERSHIP AND PIEDMONT PLAYERS MARILYN T. and JEFF NOT ONLY TOOK 1st PLACE, THEY DID SO W/ THE BEST PERCENTAGE-GAME IN THE ROOM, SCORING 51.5 (64%, BASED ON AVERAGE OF 40).  2nd PLACE (BUT ALSO 1st PLACE IN STRAT B AND THUS WINNING 1/2 FREE PLAYS EACH) WERE J-NICE (JANIS) and BOB J. W/ A SCORE OF 46.5 (58%).  MOV WAS 1 1/4 BOARDS.

E/W WINNERS, FOLLOWING UP THEIR GOOD GAME OF THE PREVIOUS WEEK, WERE LINDA and CONNIE W/ A SCORE OF 46.5 (58%).  ALSO, SAME SCORE AS 2nd PLACERS N/S) 46.5 (58%).  2nd PLACERS HERE WERE HELENE and JOHN W/ A SCORE OF 44 (55%).  MOV SLIMMEST IN ANY OF THE 3 SECTIONS ON THIS NIGHT, SLIGHTLY GREATER THAN 1/2 A BOARD.

IN THE OPEN SECTION WE WELCOMED BACK GUNNAR NIEMI, PLAYING W/ US FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MANY, MANY YEARS, PROBABLY AT LEAST 10, SINCE THE OLD BAROMETER DAYS, ON THIS NIGHT PLAYING W/ SIDNEY DURING ANNE'S ONE-WEEK ABSENCE.  THEY WERE BETTER THAN ANY OF THE REST THIS TIME, WINNING W/ A SCORE OF 43 (AVERAGE WAS 36, SO THIS ROUNDED TO 60%).  THIS WAS NOT EXACTLY A SMOKE-JOB, BUT WE CAN CALL IT A COMFORTABLE VICTORY, AS IT TURNED OUT, PROVIDING AN MOV OF JUST SHY OF A FULL BOARD.  THE MUCH MORE CONTENTIOUS BATTLE WAS FOR 2nd AND 3rd PLACES, W/ 4 PAIRS WITHIN 2 POINTS OF EACH OTHER FOR THESE 2 SPOTS.  DAVID G. and GLENN WON THIS BATTLE-WITHIN-THE-BIGGER-BATTLE FOR 2nd PLACE W/ A SCORE OF 40.5 (56.25%) AND THEY WON IT BY THAT MEASLE HALF-POINT OVER 3rd PLACERS THE DOCS (COURTENAY and ANDY) WHOSE 40 EVEN SCORE (55.56%) ROUNDED ALSO TO 56%.  THE NEXT BEST SCORE, JUST OUT OF THE MONEY FOR STRAT A AWARDS, WAS NONETHELESS GOOD FOR A SCRATCH FOR (DAVE) PRATT and (JOHN EI)DINGER, 2nd PLACE IN STRAT B VIA A SCORE OF 39 (54%).  ALSO SCRATCHING WERE LILI and MARCIA WHO MANAGED TO CAPTURE 1st PLACE IN STRAT C BY THAT (AGAIN) MEASLE HALF-POINT W/ A SCORE OF 30.5 (42%).

W/ THAT, WE'LL CONCLUDE FOR NOW W/, AS ALWAYS OF COURSE, THANKS TO ALL OF YOU CAME TO PLAY ON THESE NIGHTS AND CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO PLAYED WELL ENOUGH (AND/OR HAD ENOUGH OF LADY'S LUCK) TO SCRATCH...WELL DONE.  MUCH LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING Y'ALL WHO CAN MAKE IT TO PLAY W/ US TOMORROW NIGHT, ACTUALLY LATER TODAY AS IT IS NOW AFTER MIDNIGHT, FEBRUARY 17, PREZ. DAY, NOT WORTHY OF ANY SORT OF CELEBRATION, I WILL HUMBLY OPINE, YET WE WILL CELEBRATE ONLY W/ A FINE BRIDGE GAME, NONETHELESS.  SO, TO ALL OF YOU THEN, TILL THEN...
