Wednesdays

No Wednesday games for now.  If you would be interested in a Swiss Team Game or a Limited Pairs Game (499er, 299er, 199er, etc.) or a Limited Swiss Team Game, or any other type of game on Wednesday evenings, please speak to me (Doug) about it.  Or also please feel free to email me (dough0918@aol.com) or phone me (925:938-4493) about it (or about anything else, really).  If I can sense there is enough interest in a Wednesday game to make it work, we could certainly have one.

RESULTS FROM TONIGHT'S GAME (AUGUST 20) POSTED HERE (ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THIS PAGE) @ 11:30 pm...AND YES, IT'S TRUE, I STILL OWE YOU A BLOG FOR LAST WEEK'S GAME (AUGUST 13); WILL TRY TO GET THAT UP (ON THE OTHER/RIGHT SIDE OF THE PAGE TOMORROW--TUESDAY).  THEN I'LL ALSO NEED TO GET A BLOG FROM TONIGHT'S GAME POSTED ON THIS SIDE OF THE PAGE...AND THAT SHOULD BE LATER IN THE WEEK (W/ ANY LUCK).  FOR NOW, W/ THE USUAL "NOTHING BETTER TO DO W/ THE SPACE", THE BLOG FROM 2 WEEKS AGO (AUGUST 6) REMAINS BELOW...JUST IN CASE YOU HADN'T YET SEEN IT--HA!! (AND WANTED TO--HA!!).

AND NOW FOR NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS (BLOG) FROM THIS GAME (THIS IS GETTING POSTED HERE LATE, FRIDAY NIGHT, AUGUST 17, ALMOST A FULL WEEK PAST WHEN IT USUALLY APPEARS AND A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER THAN I'D PLANNED, AS MENTIONED IN THE COLUMN TO THE RIGHT OF THIS ONE; SORRY 'BOUT THAT...)

SO IN THE 499ers WE HAD AN UNUSUALLY SMALL (8 PAIRS) BUT DEFINITELY SPIRITED GAME, 4 TABLES, OBVIOUSLY, THUS BEST WAS A NICE HOWELL, ONLY ONE STATIONARY PAIR (MARILYN T. and JEFF WERE KIND ENOUGH TO GIVE UP THE N/S THEY USUALLY HAVE BECAUSE THEY HAVE PLAYED W/ US FOR SO MANY YEARS AND ALSO BECAUSE MARILYN BRINGS HER BIDDING BOXES EACH WEEK, MAKING LIFE HERE THAT MUCH EASIER FOR ALL OF US...ANYWAY, THEY GAVE UP THEIR N/S SO PEGGY and GAY COULD BE THAT ONE STATIONARY PAIR; BERT ALSO PREFERS A N/S, BUT HE DOESN'T OWN, THUS DOESN'T BRING, BIDDING BOXES, SO HE IS A BIT LESS ENTITLED; ALSO W/ ALL HIS HEALTHY HIKING AND CLIMBING, HE DOESN'T REALLY NEED TO BE STATIONARY, MERELY PREFERS TO BE SO).  SO W/ THE HOWELL, EACH PAIR WINDS UP PLAYING 3 BOARDS AGAINST EACH OF THE OTHER 7 PAIRS, AS PERFECT AND FAIR A GAME AS IS POSSIBLE.  WERE WE TO HAVE A TRADITIONAL MITCHELL, W/ 4 N/S PAIRS AND 4 E/W PAIRS PLAYING EACH OTHER, W/ THIS NUMBER OF TABLES, EACH PAIR WOULD HAVE PLAYED ONLY 4 OTHER PAIRS INSTEAD OF ALL THE OTHER 7, 5 BOARDS EACH ROUND.  ALSO THAT WOULD BE ONLY 20 BOARDS TOTAL AND W/ THE HOWELL, WE GET 21 WHICH I THINK ALL, INCLUDING ME, PREFER, RATHER THAN 20, WHENEVER POSSIBLE.  SO WINNERS TONIGHT WERE BERT (WAS THIS A KARMIC REWARD FOR GIVING UP THE N/S?) and KEN.  BTW, KEN's NAME NOW APPEARS ON PRINT-OUTS (DUE TO UPDATED DATA-BASE) AS KENNEDY (HIS GIVEN NAME AND THE ONE HE GAVE THE MAFIA WHEN HE FILLED OUT HIS APPLICATION TO JOIN THE LEAGUE, YES, MAFIA BEING MY PET/SCORNFUL-NAME FOR ACBL) BUT I THINK HE PREFERS KEN, SO WE'LL STAY AND GO W/ THAT...AND NOW, WHEN YOU LOOK AT PRINT-OUTS, YOU'LL KNOW WHO THAT IS.  ANY-HOO, THESE TWO HAD QUITE THE GOOD GAME, SCORING 40.5 (AVERAGE WAS 31.5), WHICH IS 64% FOR THEM, LOCKING UP THEIR VICTORY BY A SOLID 1 1/2 BOARDS.  THAT WAS THE MarginOfVictory OVER THE 2nd PLACE PAIR, ELAINEand ARNITA WHO THEMSELVES DID QUITE WELL, SCORING 36 (57%).  3rd PLACE WENT TO KC (KATHLEEN) and MARILYN (OUR VERY OWN) BOOKBINDER WHO PUT UP A FINE SCORE OF 33 (52%).

IN THE OPEN GAME, (DAVE) PRATT and (JOHN EI)DINGER REMINDED US ONCE MORE WHO IS THE BEST PAIR AMONGST US (AT LEAST RIGHT NOW, BASED ON MOST RESULTS).  THEY CHALKED UP A STEADY WIN, SCORING 59 (48 WAS AVERAGE), WHICH COMPUTES TO 61% FOR THEM.  IN SO DOING THEY WON BY A COMFORTABLE ONE BOARD OVER ANNE and SIDNEY, NO SLOUCHES THEMSELVES, NOT ON THIS NIGHT, NOT EVER, REALLY.  THEIR SCORE WAS 55 (57%).  3rd WERE JAMES and JIM S., ROCKING A 53 (55%). THE REAL (DOUG) and GISH MANAGED TO PULL OFF THE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TASK OF HITTING AVERAGE, EXACTLY RIGHT ON THE NOSE, SCORING 48 (50%, OF COURSE) TO WIN 4th PLACE BY THAT MEASLE HALF-POINT.  ALSO SCRATCHING OUT A PLACE, AND MANY PROPS TO THEM FOR SURVIVING IN THIS TOUGH COMPETITION, WERE LILI and MARCIA, WINNING 1st PLACE IN STRAT C W/ A SCORE OF 44.5 (46%).  THE OPEN GAME SOMEWHAT COMPENSATED FOR THE SMALL SIZE OF THE 499er BY FINDING A HEALTHY (LITERALLY) 10 PAIRS (5 TABLES) TO PLAY WHEN VACATIONERS RE-APPEARED FROM OTHER SUMMER ACTIVITIES, AS OPPOSED TO THE 499er, WHERE SEVERAL PAIRS (AND INDIVIDUALS) WERE EITHER STILL AWAY, FRESHLY AWAY, OR, IN A COUPLE OF CASES, LITERALLY SICK (AS OPPOSED TO HEALTHY).

CHECKING OUT THE GENDER WARS, IN THE 499er 9 WOMEN PLAYED, 7 GUYS, 56%-44% WOMEN.  AND 4 OF THE 6 SCRATCHING OUT MASTER-POINTS WERE WOMEN (BOTH HALVES OF BOTH OF THE NON-1st PLACE PAIRS), MEANING WOMEN ACTUALLY DID BETTER ON THIS NIGHT BY SCRATCHING 67% OF THE PLACINGS W/ ONLY 56% OF THE FIELD.  IN THE OPEN, 7 OF THE 13 PLAYERS WERE WOMEN (35%), BUT ONLY 3 OF THE 10 TO SCRATCH WERE WOMEN (30%).

NO FIRST-TIMERS OR EVEN RETURNEES FROM LONG ABSENCES ON THIS NIGHT, BUT MANY THANKS TO CONNIE and RON(NIE) FOR FILLING IN TO HELP US AVOID (ONE MORE TIME) A SIT-OUT (IN THE OPEN GAME).  AND, ACTUALLY, RON BARELY DOES QUALIFY AS ONE RETURNING FROM A SEMI-LONG ABSENCE, ALTHOUGH HIS LONG-TIME REGULAR PARTNER ARNE WAS TO REMAIN AWAY (I CAN SAY NOW) FOR ONE MORE WEEK.  BECOMING RON(NIE) TO FORM THE RHYMING PAIR OF CONNIE and RON(NIE), INSPIRES THE THOUGHT THAT WHEN PLAYING W/ AFORE-MENTIONED REGULAR PARTNER, THEY ARE ALSO A SORT OF RHYMING PAIR, RON(NIE) and ARN(IE?).  JUST PLAYIN' (FOOLISHLY?)...

AND W/ THAT, THE USUAL THANKS TO ALL WHO SHOWED UP TO PLAY ON THIS NIGHT, W/ EXTRA PROPS TO THOSE WHO SCRATCHED OUT PLACINGS (AND MASTER-POINTS)...AND WE'LL LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING AS MANY OF Y'ALL IN ADDITION TO OTHERS, RETURNING FROM VACAS AND SOME ILL HEALTH, (ESP. IN THE 499er GAME) NEXT WEEK (WHICH IS, DUE TO MY MANY PILES OF NEW AND UNUSUAL TASKS THESE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS, i.e. COMPUTER TROUBLES, ACTUALLY, AS I WRITE AND YOU READ THIS, NOW, THANKFULLY LAST WEEK), OK?  AND FORESHADOWING (SINCE THE SEEMING FUTURE IS NOW, IN ACTUALITY, TO SOME DEGREE, THE PAST), MY TRUSTY AND DEARLY BELOVED, NEWLY APPRECIATED HP LAPTOP WAS IN FACT TO RETURN TO FULL HEALTH AND FULL SERVICE DUTY AND ACTION WHEN NEXT WE WERE TO MEET, MANY THANKS TO VANCE, MY NEW-FOUND (SURPRISINGLY YOUNG) TECHIE GURU AT CANTRELL COMPUTER SERVICES IN CONCORD AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM (AND THEM).  IF YOU NEED THEM, YOU COULD MENTION THAT WE SENT YOU TO THEM...TILL THEN...

P.S. SORRY ABOUT THESE COLUMNS REMAINING SO WEIRD...GOTTA GET TO WEB.COM TO SEE IF THEY CAN RESTORE THEM TO PROPER WIDTHS.  BUT FOR NOW, NEED DINNER AND SLEEP FOR EARLY GET UP TO WORK TOURNAMENT IN REDWOOD CITY...DO HOPE TO SEE SOME OF YOU THERE...

SCORES FROM TONIGHT'S (AUGUST 13) GAME ARE POSTED IN THE FAR LEFT COLUMN, AS USUAL AND THEY WERE PUT UP JUST AFTER 11:15 pm.  TO THOSE OF YOU WHO READ THESE COLUMNS (THE BLOGS) EACH WEEK, YES, YOU'RE CORRECT, I NEVER GOT TIME TO WRITE ONE FROM LAST WEEK'S (AUGUST 6) GAME IN THE COLUMN JUST TO THE LEFT OF THIS ONE.  I MEAN TO GET TO THAT EARLY THIS WEEK.  AND THEN, AFTER THAT, I WILL ALSO GET, SOMETIME BEFORE THE WEEK END,TO ONE HERE, BELOW, ABOUT THIS WEEK'S GAME (499er AND OPEN SECTIONS).  BUT FOR NOW, FOR LACK OF ANYTHING BETTER W/ WHICH TO FILL THAT SPACE, I WILL LEAVE UP BELOW THE ONE FROM 2 WEEKS AGO (GAME COMPRISED OF OUR USUAL 2 SECTIONS ON NIGHT OF JULY 30).

IN THE 499er, N/S, A VERY BIG AND DOMINATING WIN FOR JOE FENDEL and MARCEL HAWIGER.  THESE NICE YOUNG GENTLEMEN DON'T GET TO PLAY PROBABLY AS OFTEN AS THEY'D LIKE, BUT WHEN THEY DO, THEY'VE PUT UP SOME PRETTY GOOD RESULTS LATELY.  ON THIS NIGHT THEY SCORED 52.5 (AVERAGE WAS 40), 66% TO WIN BY ALMOST 2 1/2 BOARDS.  THE 2nd PLACE PAIR WAS ARNITA and ELAINE WHO SCORED A MORE THAN RESPECTABLE 43 (54%) TO JUST NIP BILL WARREN and BERT LEVY BY OUR GOOD OL' FRIEND THE MEASLE HALF-POINT FOR THE ONLY OTHER SCRATCH FOR N/S.

E/W, THE FIELD WAS (AS FREQUENTLY SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN THE CASE RECENTLY) COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, COMPLETELY OPPOSITE FROM THE N/S FIELD IN THAT THEY WERE ALL VERY CLOSELY BUNCHED.  THE TOP 5 E/W SCORES ON THIS NIGHT JUST HAPPENED TO BE 44.5, 42, 41.5, 40, AND 39, SEPARATION TOP TO BOTTOM FOR THESE 5 OF SLIGHTLY MORE THAN ONE FULL BOARD.  VERY UNUSUAL.  OF THESE, AS W/ N/S, DUE TO THE WAY THE STRATIFICATION WORKED THIS WEEK, ONLY 2 PAIRS ACTUALLY SCRATCHED (MANAGED TO WIN MASTER-POINTS).  COMING IN 1st PLACE, FOR THE TOP POINTS AND THE FREE PLAYS WERE STEPHANIE DALY and BC (BONNIE) WALSH WHOSE SCORE OF 44.5 (56%) WAS GOOD FOR THE WIN IN ONLY STEPHANIE's 2nd GAME W/ US.  WELL DONE YOU TWO.  SLIGHTLY MORE THAN  HALF A BOARD FURTHER BACK WERE GAYLE and JULIE WHO SCORED 42 (52.5%) AND GOOD FOR 2nd PLACE.  FUNNY PART IS, AS THEY WERE LEAVING, THEY SEEMED QUITE SURE THIS HAD BEEN THEIR "WORST GAME EVER", AS I THINK I REMEMBER THE QUOTE.  SPECIFICALLY I THINK JULIE WAS HALF-LAUGHING AT HERSELF (AND OF COURSE ALSO HALF BEMOANING) THAT SHE HAD MANAGED TO GO DOWN 6 (VULNERABLE) AT ONE CONTRACT.  WELL, I THINK MANY FOLKS CAN EASILY GET DISCOURAGED OVER ANY SUCH (ONE) BAD RESULT, FORGETTING THAT WE DON'T PLAY RUBBER BRIDGE...AT MATCH-POINTS, ONE BAD BOARD, NO MATTER HOW HORRIBLE AND AWFUL, ONLY ACCOUNTS FOR 4-5% OF THE ENTIRE EVENING'S SCORE. AT RUBBER BRIDGE, YES, ONE BAD RESULT CAN SPILL OVER AND TAINT AN ENTIRE LARGER # OF REASONABLY GOOD BOARDS AND THUS CAUSE YOU TO DO POORLY, BUT NOT NECESSARILY SO AT MATCHPOINTS.  CASE IN POINT, THE PAIR WHO SET THEM 6 ON THAT PARTICULAR BOARD DIDN'T HAVE A VERY GOOD GAME ON THIS NIGHT AT ALL (ALTHOUGH THEY ARE GOOD PAIR WHO FREQUENTLY DO QUITE WELL).  CONVERSELY, GAIL and JULIE CLEARLY DID MORE THAN WELL ENOUGH ON THE OTHER 19 BOARDS TO GET A GOOD SCORE FOR THE EVENING AND, IN FACT, JUST MISSED 1st PLACE BY ONLY 2.5 MATCHPOINTS.  BOTTOM LINE, DON'T GET TOO BUMMED BY ONE (OR EVEN MORE) SEEMINGLY BAD BOARDS.  THERE ARE AROUND 20 MORE TO HELP YOU MAKE UP FOR IT...

IN THE OPEN GAME, A FAIRLY NORMAL DISTRIBUTION PATTERN OF SCORES ON THIS NIGHT.  NO ONE PAIR RAN AWAY FROM THE REST OF THE FIELD BUT THE MarginOfVictory WASN'T ENOUGH TO CAUSE BITTEN NAILS BY THE PAIRS THAT DIDN'T WIN EITHER.  BEST ON THIS NIGHT WERE WINNERS DAVID GEARY and GLENN BOYCE WHO TALLIED 29.5 (25 WAS AVERAGE) FOR A 59% GAME, FREQUENTLY GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN, AS ON THIS NIGHT, BUT ON SOME NIGHTS JUST NOT.  THEN THERE WAS A TIE FOR 2nd/3rd PLACE BETWEEN GISH and (THE REAL) DOUG, ALSO DOC (COURTENAY) and JIM SCOTT, EACH OF WHOM SCORED 27.5 (55%).

WE GOT TO MEET (AND GREET) ONE FIRST-TIMER THIS WEEK, CHERYL BRODSKY, BROUGHT TO US BY HER FRIEND (AND OURS) HELEN BURKE.  I GOT THE IDEA THAT WE WERE HARDLY CHERYL's FIRST RODEO, IN THAT SHE SEEMED TO KNOW WHAT SHE WAS DOING.  SO WE ALWAYS ENJOY PROFICIENCY AND WE HOPE CHERYL WILL BRING HERS BACK TO US AGAIN SOON.  AND SPECIAL THANKS TO BOTH PAIRS WHO STARTED AT TABLE 2 IN THE 499er GAME, REGULAR E/W PLAYERS W/ US ARNITA and ELAINE AND ST. PAUL'S TOWERS RESIDENTS, PARTNERS, AND FRIENDS SHIRLEY McGILL and LAURA BUSHMAN/DAVIS (THE FORMER IS LAURA's CURRENT, ACTUAL REAL LAST NAME, BUT SHE USES THE LATTER AS HER BRIDGE LAST NAME AS SHE PILED UP MOST OF HER POINTS PLAYING W/ HER LATE HUSBAND W/ WHOM SHE SHARED THE NAME).  THEY INITIALLY SAT DOWN AS N/S, BUT IN ORDER TO BALANCE THE FIELD (LAURA HAS WAY MORE POINTS THAN ANYONE ELSE IN THE GAME ON THIS NIGHT AND I NEEDED THE TWO PAIRS TO SWITCH DIRECTIONS, SO AS TO BALANCE THE FIELD, POINTS-WISE).  BOTH PAIRS WERE KIND ENOUGH TO ACCOMODATE THIS REQUEST RIGHT AT GAME-TIME.

AND FINALLY, CHECKING OUT THE GENDER MAKE-UP OF OUR GAMES ON THIS NIGHT, IN THE 499er, WE HAD 15 WOMEN, 9 MEN (62.5% WOMEN).  OF THOSE WHO SCRATCHED 6 WERE WOMEN (75%) TO 2 MEN.  IN THE OPEN, 4 WOMEN AND 8 MEN, BUT ALL 6 PLAYERS WHO SCRATCHED HAPPENED TO BE MEN ON THIS NIGHT.

SO, AGAIN, MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO SHOWED UP, ALSO TO ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE W/ MY STRUGGLES TO GET THE SCORES UP W/ MY NEW AND RATHER UNFAMILIAR EQUIPMENT.  CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO DID WELL ENOUGH TO SCRATCH AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING Y'ALL AND ANYONE ELSE WHO HAS A HANKERING AND CAN MAKE IT TO PLAY W/ US TOMORROW NIGHT, OK?  TILL THEN...
