Mondays

No Wednesday games for now...If you would be interested in a Swiss Team Game or a Limited Pairs Game (499er, 299er, 199er, etc.) or a Limited Swiss Team Game, or any other type of game on Wednesday evenings, please speak to me (Doug) about it.  Or also please feel free to email me (dough0918@aol.com) or phone me (925:938-4493) about it (or about anything else really).  if I can sense there is enough interest in a Wednesday game to make it work, we could certainly have one.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT, I WAS (AGAIN) A KNUCKLE-HEAD AND FORGOT TO ANNOUNCE LAST EVENING VIA "CHAT TO TOURNAMENT" THAT OUR GAMES NEXT WEEK (SEPTEMBER 21 AND 24WILL BOTH AWARD 2X (DOUBLE) MASTER POINTS (1/4 GOLD, 3/4 BLACK).  THESE WILL LIKELY BE GOOD (BIG) GAMES, SO PLAN ON COMING ON DOWN.  THEY ARE CHARGING US AN EXTRA $5/TABLE SANCTION FEE FOR THEM, SO, AS BEFORE, I WILL RAISE OUR TABLE FEE FOR THOSE 2 (ONLY) GAMES $1/PERSON (TO $7/EACH) WHICH WILL COVER 4 OF THOSE 5 SANCTION FEE DOLLARS...AND I WILL CONTRIBUTE THAT LAST DOLLAR FOR EACH TABLE.  SO, NOW YOU CAN PLAN ACCORDINGLY, PLEASE DON'T FERGIT...

GREETINGS!!!  FROM THE TUESDAY MORNING "MONDAY EVENING GAME'S NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS BLOG" STAFF, YOUR FAITHFUL CREW OF ONE.  ANOTHER FINE GAME AND TURNOUT FEATURING ONE REALLY HUGE BLOWOUT WIN (N/S) AND ANOTHER NOT EXACTLY HUGE, BUT STILL PRETTY DARN GOOD BLOWOUT WIN (E/W), ESP. SINCE IT FEATURED A STRAT C, EASILY 499er-QUALIFIED PAIR.  Y'ALL KNOW WE DO LOVE THOSE...

BUT WE'LL START, AS IS OUR CUSTOM, W/ N/S WHERE THE BLOWOUT WINNERS WERE PRAKASH and GISH; NOW, YOU GOTTA LOOK OUT FOR THESE TWO NOW...THEY CAN GO SEVERAL GAMES AND NOT DO MUCH, BUT ONCE THEY GET HOT, THEY CAN ALSO RATTLE OFF A FEW WINS IN A ROW OR AT LEAST SEVERAL CONSECURIVE GOOD GAMES, SO LAST EVENING COULD BE THE START OF ANOTHER SUCH RUN.  THEY SCORED A WHOPPING 135.5 (AVERAGE WAS 99, SO THIS PROVED TO BE 68%...OF THE AVAILABLE/POSSIBLE MATCH POINTS), CLEARLY AND BY A PRETTY WIDE MARGIN, THE BEST IN "THE ROOM" ON THIS EVENING.  I DO PUT THAT PHRASE IN QUOTES BECAUSE I SOMETIMES STILL HAVE TROUBLE...MY BRAIN PLAYS TRICKS ON ME, PRETENDING THAT ALL OF YOU ARE STILL IN "THAT (BIG) ROOM" IN PIEDMONT PLAYING AWAY, WHILE ONLY I AM CONSIGNED BY THE SHELTER IN PLACE RULES TO STAY BY MY COMPUTER HERE AT MY KITCHEN TABLE.  I AM, MORE AND MORE REALIZING THIS IS PURE FICTION AND THAT WE ALL ARE PLUGGING AWAY HERE AT OUR RESPECTIVE KITCHEN TABLES (OR OFFICE TABLES OR COUCHES)...BUT IT REMAINS A WORK IN PROGRESS FOR ME TO FULLY GRASP ANY/ALL OF IT...BACK TO THE SUBJECT AT HAND, VULNRABLEV (VALERIE) and ALPETE99 (AL) HAD A FINE GAME, BUT ONLY GOOD ENOUGH FOR 2nd PLACE THIS EVENING, A 116.5 SCORE BEING A 58% GAME.  (I LIKE THE SOUND OF VAL and AL, BUT I REFRAIN FROM IT BECAUSE I KIND OF SUSPECT(?) SHE PREFERS TO BE CALLED VALERIE.)  THIS PROVIDES A MarginOfVictory OF A TAD OVER 1 3/4 BOARDS.  ALSO FINE SHOWINGS FOR 2 PAIRS WHO TIED FOR 3rd/4th PLACE.  ONE IS YET ANOTHER STRAT C PAIR FRANKIE and PAUL L. AND, YOU MARK MY WORDS, THIS IS ANOTHER FINE UP AND COMING SUCH PAIR...FROM WHAT I HAVE GATHERED SO FAR, FRANKIE IS, RELATIVELY SPEAKING, A REALLY BRAND NEW PLAYER WHO EITHER IS TELE-BBO'ING W/ US FROM CHAPEL HILL, NC (HOME OF U. OF NORTH CAROLINA) OR HAS MIGRATED HERE FROM THERE FAIRLY RECENTLY, WHEREAS PAUL IS A LONG-TIME FRIEND/LONG-AGO PARTNER OF GLENN, BACK WHEN THEY WERE BOTH NEWISH PLAYERS AND PAUL HASN'T PLAYED ALL THAT MUCH SINCE THEN (WORK/FAMILY, ETC.?), BUT I DO SUSPECT THEY'LL CONTINUE TO SURPRISE US, AT LEAST BASED ON THE FACT THAT THEY SEEM TO HAVE FAR FEWER MASTER POINTS THAN ANY OTHER PLAYERS IN OUR "ROOM"...AND FOR THAT WE REALLY WELCOME THEM HEARTILY (AND NEED THEMSmile).  SO THEY ALSO WON THE C STRAT AND THAT 1st PLACE AWARD WAS GREATER THAN THE STRAT A 3rd/4th AWARD, SO THAT'S THE ONE THEY RECEIVE.  THE OTHER TIED PAIR WAS NICE ENOUGH TO BE SUBSTITUTES FOR US AT THE LAST MOMENT, MALMENDE (MAL) and JIM OSER.  THE FORMER IS A FINE PLAYER WE KNOW WELL WHO THOUGHT HE HAD A GAME SCHEDULED FOR THIS EVENING, BUT, AS HAS APPARENTLY HAPPENED BEFORE, HIS SUPPOSED PARTNER EITHER SPACED IT OUT OR JUST COULDN'T FIND US.  JIM, AS IT TURNS OUT, WAS CLEVER ENOUGH TO VOLUNTEER TO SUB VIA CHAT, JUST PRIOR TO GAME TIME.  I DON'T THINK WE KNOW HIM, BUT DATA BASE REVEALS HIM TO ACTUALLY BE A NEIGHBOR FROM NEARBY NOVATO, A STILL 499er-QUALIFIED PLAYER WHO APPARENTLY KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING.  THESE PAIRS EACH SCORED 106 (54%).  ALSO SCRATCHING WERE ARGLE89 (MARCIA) and LILIMCB (LILI) WHOSE 100.5 (51%) GOT THEM 2nd PLACE IN STRAT B;  ALSO MIMIDR (MIMI) and (JODYSHAP) JODY's 99 (EXACTLY 50%) SCORED THEM 3rd PLACE IN STRAT B;  AND FINALLY ARTHUR and TOM MANAGED 96 (48%) FOR 2nd PLACE IN STRAT C.  WE'RE HAPPY THAT 7 OF THE 12 PAIRS IN THIS SECTION SCRATCHED.

CHECKING OUT THE WINNERS AND THEIR (SEEMINGLY EASY) PATH TO VICTORY, IT WAS INDEED ALL OF THAT.  THEY SCORED A PURE TOP (11 MATCH POINTS) ON BOARD #1 AND WERE NEVER HEADED OR EVEN TIED AFTER THAT.  THEY BACKED IT UP W/ A 5-WAY TIE FOR TOP (9 MATCH POINTS) ON BOARD #2 FOR THEIR SMALLEST LEAD OF THE EVENING, 1 POINT OVER VALERIE and AL WHO'D SCORED A 10 AND A 9 ON THAT 1st ROUND.  AFTER THAT THEIR CLOSEST PURSUERS FOR MOST OF THE REST OF THE GAME WERE ARGLE89 and LILIMCB.  THEY WERE BEHIND PRAKASH and GISH BY RELATIVELY SMALL MARGINS OF BETWEEN 4 AND 8 MATCH POINTS AFTER THE ENTIRETY OF ROUNDS 2 THROUGH AND INCLUDING 6.  ROUND 7 WAS, HOWEVER, NOT KIND TO ARGLE89 and LILIMCB. OTHER THAN FOR 2 VERY BRIEF INSTANCES, NO OTHER PAIR WAS EVER W/IN EVEN A FULL BOARD OF PRAKASH and GISH AFTER THAT 1st ROUND.  THEY HAD ONLY ONE BAD ROUND (#5, i.e. BOARD #s 9 AND 10, ON WHICH THEY SCORED A 2 AND A 3).  THEY HAD NO OTHER AVERAGE (OR BELOW) ROUNDS AND ONLY 1 OTHER BOARD THAT WAS (BARELY, 0.5 POINT) BELOW AVERAGE AND 1 OTHER THAT WAS AVERAGE (5.5).  THEIR LEAD AFTER ROUND 7 WAS SUDDENLY 14 POINTS.  AFTER ROUND 8 IT HAD GROWN TO 17, OVER VULNRABLEV and ALPETE99, WHO AT THAT POINT WERE THE ONLY PAIR W/ EVEN A (BARE) MATHEMATICAL CHANCE TO CATCH THEM.  THAT CHANCE EVAPORATED ON THE PENULTIMATE BOARD (#17).  THE EVENTUAL 2nd PLACERS SCORED A 10.  THEY'D BID A GAME THAT REALLY WASN'T VERY SOUND, BUT DID MAKE, ON A FINESSE.  BUT THE EVENTUAL WINNERS SCORED A 7 BY MAKING THOSE 10 TRIX AT THE SAME HEART CONTRACT, EVEN THOUGH THEY HADN'T BID GAME (4 OTHER DECLARERS DIDN'T EVEN MAKE THE 10 TRIX).  SO THE LEAD HAD NOW SHRUNK BACK TO 14 POINTS, BUT W/ ONLY 11 POINTS AVAILABLE ON THE ONE REMAINING BOARD, IT WAS 'NITE, 'NITE, GAME OVER, THANX FOR COMING, PLEASE...DRIVE HOME SAFELY (HA)...

ON TO THE E/W PERSPECTIVE, OUR BIG WINNERS WERE (THAT STRAT C PAIR) HERIKAN (PATTI) and (GASTROMAN) MARK K.  CONGRATS, CONGRATS.  THEY SCORED 126 (64%), QUITE A NICE HIGH NUMBER, OFTEN GOOD ENOUGH FOR BEST SCORE IN "THE ROOM", BUT NOT ON THIS EVENING.  IN 2nd PLACE WE FIND BLAIR and WURAT (ERIC) W/ A SCORE OF 118 (59.6%).  MOV WAS 8/11 (72.7%) OF A FULL BOARD.  3rd AND 4th PLACES WERE BOTH CAPTURED BY STRAT B PAIRS, BUT THEIR RESPECTIVE 2nd AND 3rd PLACE FINISHES IN THE LOWER STRAT WEREN'T ENOUGH TO MERIT MASTER POINT AWARDS GREATER THAN THEIR STRAT A AWARDS.  IN 3rd WERE JANICE and JERRYCOAK (JERRY CA) WHO'D SCORED 114 (58%).  4th WERE SARLA and AMY SCORING 107 (54%).  IN 5th PLACE WERE HANK and SIDNEY W/ A SCORE OF 101 (51%).  ALSO SCRATCHING WERE HELENE and JOHN WHOSE 87.5 (44%) EARNED THEM 2nd PLACE IN STRAT C.

ON TO THE PATH TO VICTORY, PATTI and MARK TOOK A SIMILAR AND PARALLEL ROUTE, IF NOT AN EXACTLY IDENTICAL ONE TO THE ONE ON WHICH PRAKASH and GISH HAD SO SMOOTHLY TRAVELLED.  THEY SIMILARLY STARTED W/ A TOP (11) WHEN THEIR OPPS BID TOO HIGH (AND WERE ALERTLY DOUBLED), THEN GOT ANOTHER GOOD BOARD (8.5) WHEN OPPS GOT TO A MAKEABLE CONTRACT ON WHICH I THINK THEY GUESSED WRONG ON THE TRUMP FINESSE.  SO THEIR EARLY LEAD WAS 1.5 POINTS OVER THE ONLY PAIR THAT REALLY CHALLENGED THEM ALL EVENING, JANICE and JERRYCOAK.  THEY EXTENDED THAT LEAD TO 3.5 POINTS AFTER ROUND 2, AFTER WHICH THEY WERE HAVING AN OTHERWORLDLY 82% GAME.  HOWEVER ROUND 3 RUDELY BROUGHT THEM BACK TO EARTH ON BOARD #6, WHEN THEIR OPPS MAY HAVE USED DRURY TO CLEVERLY ALLOW THEM TO GET OUT AT 2S, WHEREAS J SQUARED's OPPS (AND OTHERS) MAY HAVE NOT KNOWN (OR HADN'T DISCUSSED) DRURY AND GOT UP TO 3S.  5 N/S PAIRS PLAYED IN SPADES AND ONLY ONE OF THEM MADE 9 TRIX, WHICH LOOKS EASY, UNTIL YOU DISCOVER THE 4-1 TRUMP BREAK.  SO J SQUARED PICKED UP 6 MATCH POINTS ON THIS BOARD AND HAD THEIR SHINIEST MOMENT IN THE SUN W/ A 2.5 POINT LEAD.  HOWEVER ON THE VERY NEXT BOARD (#7) THE NEWLY CROWNED LEADERS MANAGED TO STOP IN ALL OF 1H, BUT THEY MAY HAVE RUN UP AGAINST BETTER DEFENSE AND ONLY MADE 8 TRIX, WHEREAS THE EVENTUAL WINNERS PROGRESSED AS FAR AS 2H, BUT THEIR OPPS CLEARLY DIDN'T FIND THE IMPREGNABLY BETTER DEFENSE...AND ALLOWED THEM TO MAKE 9 TRIX, SWINGING EXACTLY THOSE 2.5 POINTS BACK TO CREATE A TIE AT THAT POINT, EACH PAIR CRUSING ALONG AT ALMOST PRECISELY 70%.  BOARD #8 TO CLOSE OUT ROUND 4 BROKE THE TIE WHEN TEAM KOGAN's OPPS GOT INTO A BAD CONTRACT (2C W/ A BAD TRUMP BREAK) BARELY MAKING +110, WHEREAS J SQUARED's OPPS GOT INTO THE FAR BETTER CONTRACT OF 2S AND MADE AN EASY +200, SWINGING 4.5 MATCHPOINTS BACK TO THE EVENTUAL WINNERS, AND THEY WERE THEN OFF TO THE RACES AND THEIR LEAD ONLY GREW W/ EVERY BOARD AFTER THAT...TO 9 POINTS AFTER ROUND 5, 14 POINTS AFTER ROUND 6 AND 18 POINTS AFTER ROUND 7, BY WHICH TIME BLAIR and WURAT HAD CRANKED THINGS UP AND PASSED J SQUARED INTO 2nd PLACE.  THEY'D GOTTEN OFF TO AN AWFUL START, BOTTOMING OUT AT 40% AFTER 9 BOARDS (EXACTLY HALF-WAY THROUGH THE EVENT).  HOWEVER THEY KICKED IT INTO GEAR FROM THAT POINT ON W/ A NEAR MIRROR-IMAGE OPPOSITE 79% OVER THE 2nd HALF (FINAL 9 BOARDS).  AS THE 1st HALF CAME TO A CLOSE, THEY WERE 31 POINTS BEHIND TEAM KOGAN.  OVER THE 2nd HALF, THEY LOST POINTS (5) TO THEM ON ONLY ONE BOARD (#12), GAINING POINTS ON ALL BUT 2 OTHER BOARDS (ON WHICH THEY PUSHED/TIED, OBVIOUSLY).  ON BOARDS # 10, 11, 13, 14, 16, AND 17, THEY GAINED, RESPECTIVELY, 3, 7, 5.5, 2.5, 6, AND 4 POINTS, A TOTAL OF 28 POINTS.  MINUS THE 5 POINTS THEY'D LOST ON BOARD #12, ACCOUNTS FOR THE FINAL MOV OF 8 POINTS.  MEANWHILE HERIKAN and GASTROMAN's LEAD OVER THEM ENTERING THE FINAL ROUND WAS STILL 12 POINTS, 14.5 OVER J SQUARED AT WHICH POINT EVERYONE ELSE HAD BEEN MATHEMATICALLY ELIMINATED.  IN SPITE OF THE 2 REMAING CHALLENGERS HAVING VERY GOOD SCORES ON BOARD #17 (10.5 AND 9 RESPECTIVELY), THE WINNERS MANAGED 6.5 POINTS, WHICH ELIMINATED J SQUARED AND STILL LEFT BLAIR and WURAT W/ A SLIM, BUT FIGHTING CHANCE, 8 POINTS IN ARREARS W/ 11 POINTS AVAILABLE ON THE FINAL BOARD...BUT ALL THE COMPETITORS PUSHED/TIED ON THE FINAL BOARD, SCORED 7 POINTS EACH WHEN ALL BUT 3 N/S PAIRS WERE IN 4S MAKING 12 TRIX ON A LOVELY LAYOUT WHERE SLAM JUST DIDN'T LOOK RIGHT ON ONLY A COMBINED 25 HCP.  GAME, SET, AND MATCH.

DATABASE BREAKDOWN OF OUR FIELDS FOR THIS GAME REVEALS 11 499er-QUALIFIED PAIRS, 9 OPEN PAIRS AND 4 PAIRS W/ ONE PLAYER FROM EACH CATEGORY...

CONGRATS (AGAIN) TO ALL WHO SCRATCHED AND THANKS TO ALL WHO CAME...ER, WHO PARTICIPATED.  PROBABLY AT LEAST SOME OTHERS OF YOU (INCLUDING MELINDA, I'M GUESSING, BUT ALSO CERTAINLY MYSELF) ENJOYED THE ENTIRE EVENING IN OUR JAMMIES.  NEXT GAMES NOW THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 17, THEN AGAIN NEXT MONDAY SEPTEMBER 21.  ALL GAMES STARTING AT 7:10 pm.  DO HOPE TO SEE AS MANY OF Y'ALL AS CAN MAKE IT THEN...TILL THEN...

...HOPEFULLY YOU'LL REMEMBER WHERE TO FIND RESULTS FROM GAMES NOWADAYS...IN CASE YOU WEREN'T SURE, SIMPLY TYPE, THEN CLICK ON live.acbl.org, ENTER SPECIFICALLY New Piedmont Bridge Center IN THE View Club Results SEARCH BAR, CLICK AND VOILA!  ALL GAMES, VIRTUAL AND NOT, LISTED IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER W/ MOST RECENT AT THE TIPPY TOP.  (USUALLY TAKES 15 MINUTES TO HALF AN HOUR AFTER MOST OF OUR GAMES TILL THEY'VE BEEN BROUGHT IN TO THIS SITE, BUT IT ALL GETS THERE.)

ALSO SOME OF YOU MAY NOT YET HAVE DISCOVERED THAT ONE MAJOR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN F2F (FACE2FACE) GAMES AND THOSE OF THE CURRENT VIRTUAL STYLE...IS THAT IN THE FORMER, WE ALERTED OUR PARTNER'S CALLS AND PLAYS AND THEY ALERTED OURS.  IN OUR CURRENT (VIRTUAL) INCARNATION, THAT PROCEDURE IS TOTALLY REVERSED AND, AS SUCH, MIRRORS WHAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN TRUE (CAUSE IT'S SLIGHTLY BETTER, WHENEVER POSSIBLE) IN THE FINAL SEVERAL ROUNDS AND DAYS OF MOST OF THE TOP-LEVEL NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL EVENTS PRETTY MUCH WORLD-WIDE.  OF COURSE VIRTUAL STYLE MAKES THIS EASY...THE KEY PART BEING, WHEN YOU ALERT YOUR OWN BID (OR TRANSFER, OR ANNOUNCEMENT), BOTH OPPONENTS CAN SEE THAT, AND EVEN ASK YOU ABOUT IT IF THEY WISH, YET PARTNER SEES (AND OBVIOUSLY HEARS) NONE OF THIS...AND VICE VERSA, WHEN PARTNER ALERTS THEIR OWN CALLS OR PLAYS.  ADVANTAGE BEING, OPPONENTS ALWAYS GETS TO SEE AT LEAST THE BIDDER OR PLAYER'S VERSION OF WHAT THEIR AGREEMENT IS (AND PARTNER IS NONE THE WISER)...SAVES LOTS OF ARGUMENTS AND BEEFS AND WRANGLING...

LEAVING UP WHAT IS BELOW FOR AWHILE, JUST IN CASE ANYONE VISITS HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE ADVENT OF THE NEW (VIRTUAL) FORMAT FOR OUR GAMES.  DON'T WORRY, I PROMISE I'LL TAKE IT DOWN EVENTUALLY, BUT WANT TO MAKE SURE IT'S AVAILABLE TO ANYONE WHO MAY STILL NEED IT...

HERE'S SOMETHING NEW, LYNN JUST SENT...TUTORIAL:

                                                                                                             https://www.acbl.org/bbotutorials/

another little bit jim scott thought i'd forgotten to put in earlier...but i just looked and found it...it is there near the bottom of this column, but i suppose it's worth mentioning again here...which is that in order to play in any (including ours, which costs $6) virtual (piedmont) acbl club games (or any game on bbo which costs money, some do, some don't), one needs to purchase bb$s (bridge base dollars).  there is a tab for this (says exactly that, "bb$") in the upper right part of the web-site.  you can buy 'em via credit card (immediate) or check (have to go through snail-mail and wait)...

THESE GAMES ARE RUN PRIMARILY FOR PLAYERS WHO'VE PLAYED (AND WON AT LEAST SOME MASTERPOINTS) W/ US IN  PIEDMONT AT ANY POINT IN EITHER 2020 OR 2019.  EXCEPTIONS TO THIS MAY BE ADDED LATER.  FOR NOW, I DO KNOW YOU NEED TO SIGN UP W/ BBO (bridgebase.com) WHICH, I'VE FOUND, IS BEST WAY TO LOG ONTO THEM.  SIGNING UP IS FREE (PICK A SCREEN NAME AND PASSWORD).  REGISTRATION FOR EACH PARTICULAR GAME (THEY ARE CALLED "TOURNAMENTS" BY BBO) BEGINS ONLY AT APPROXIMATELY 2 HOURS BEFORE (AND CONTINUES UP UNTIL A FEW MINUTES BEFORE) GAME TIME. THIS MEANS STARTING @ AROUND 5:10 pm ON MONDAY.  YOU'LL NEED TO CLICK ON VIRTUAL CLUBS, THEN ON VIRTUAL ACBL CLUBS.  YOU CAN FIND OUR SPECIFIC GAME UNDER SOME VERSION OR ABBREVIATION OF "PIEDMONT" AND/OR OUR CLUB USER NAME WHICH IS:

                                                                       VACB214114.

WE'RE GOING TO PLAY 18 BOARDS, ALL ONE SECTION (OPEN, BUT STRATIFIED) FOR NOW.  IF YOU'RE NOT CLEAR ON YOUR PLAYER #, ASK ME AND I CAN FIND IT FOR YOU...OTHERWISE IF YOU GET THAT WRONG, YOU'LL BE PUT IN STRAT A.  PLANNING FOR 499er SECTION TO BE ADDED LATER.  3 BOARD ROUNDS W/ TIME CLOCK SET AT 21 MINUTES FOR EACH ROUND.  IF BOARDS AREN'T FINISHED, SYSTEM SENDS US ON TO THE NEXT ROUND ANYWAY AND WE DO OUR BEST TO AWARD SCORES BASED ON EFFORT TO PLAY UP TO TEMPO.  PARTNERSHIP OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE, EITHER THROUGH ME OR ON THE GAME SITE, ONCE IT IS SET UP.

AS MELINDA SAID, "WE GET TO PLAY IN OUR JAMMIES"...THAT PLUS W/ NO DRIVING OR PARKING ISSUES, NO MOVEMENT OF BOARDS OR PEOPLE AND SCORING BEING DONE FOR US BY THE EVER WATCHFUL COMPUTER WE SHOULD FINISH OUR BOARDS (AND BE HOME, YES, POSSIBLY IN OUR JAMMIES) IN 2 HOURS OR SO, GIVE OR TAKE...THAT'S THE MODEL SUGGESTED FOR NOW, COULD BE REVISED LATER.

COST IS $5/PERSON.  FOR THOSE UNFAMILIAIR W/ BBO SO FAR, BB$ CAN BE PURCHASED FOR THAT PURPOSE ON THE HOME/LOG-IN SCREEN.  AND OF COURSE I'D SUGGEST YOU GIVE IT A WHIRL W/ ONE OF THEIR "FREE" (BUT FACELESS STRANGERS AND/OR "ROBOTS" FOR PARTNER AND OPPONENTS) OPTIONS...JUST TO BECOME FAMILIAR W/ THE PROCESS.

ANY QUESTIONS? PLEASE, RUN 'EM BY ME...EMAIL: dough0918@aol.com AS PER USUAL.  DO HOPE TO "SEE" Y'ALL THURSDAY NIGHTSmile.

Thursdays

Yes, the new evening for our 2nd (virtual) weekly game now.

THIS COMING WEEK, BOTH MONDAY EVENING'S (SEPTEMBER 21) ALSO NEXT THURSDAY EVENING'S (SEPTEMBER 24) GAMES WILL AWARD 2X (DOUBLE), 25% GOLD, 75% BLACK MASTER POINTS.  TABLE FEE FOR THOSE 2 GAMES ONLY WILL BE $7 TO HELP COVER THE COST OF $5 SANCTION FEE WE MUST PAY FOR THESE GAMES.  THEY WILL LIKELY BE GOOD, BIG GAMES, SO YOU'LL PROBABLY WANT TO GET TO COME ON DOWN, IF POSSIBLE.

NOW WE'LL BEGIN THE NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS (BLOG) ABOUT OUR MOST RECENT THURSDAY EVENING (SEPTEMBER 17) GAME, AS WE TYPE THIS A DAY AND A HALF LATER AFTER A BUSY (AND SAD, W/ ESPECIALLY UGLY POLITICAL PORTENT, PASSING OF RBG--"I STOOD ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS") FRIDAY, NOW BEING THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY MORNING.  WE DON'T USUALLY BEGIN W/ FIRST-TIMERS NOTES, BUT WE WILL THIS TIME BECAUSE ONE OF THEM MANAGED TO COME IN 1st PLACE N/S (YES, WE ALL KNOW HE WAS CARRIED BY HIS MOST ABLE AND WONDERFUL PARTNERSmile).  THE ONE WHO DID NOT MANAGE TO ACCOMPLISH THIS (THIS TIME) WAS DAN NOEL, BROUGHT TO US BY ONE OF, IF NOT MORAGA'S ACTUAL, FINEST WMJ999 (WHOM WE ALL KNOW AFFECTIONATELY AS WINNIE), WHO MADE THE VIRTUAL TRIP TO US WHILE SHE AND LAMORINDA (JERRY CH) ARE ACTUALLY IN SAN DIEGO FOR THE WEEK W/ MANY FAMILY AND FRIENDS.  BUT THE WINNERS WERE MISOOK (WHO'D ACTUALLY PLAYED W/ US VIRTUALLY, AT LEAST ONCE, OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD) and DJKROLL (DAN) WHO HADN'T YET AND IN FACT LAST PLAYED W/ US (F2F) IN PIEDMONT ON MY BABY SISTER'S BIRTHDAY (OCTOBER 15) NEARLY 2 YEARS AGO (2018).  MISOOK HAD ACTUALLY PLAYED W/ US F2F IN PIEDMONT A FEW TIMES IN 2019, THUS MAKING OUR ORIGINAL "CUSTOM LIST", PLAYERS WHO WERE AUTOMATICALLY ADMITTED TO OUR VIRTUAL GAMES, ONCE THEY'D BEGUN.  THEY SCORED A NICE 70.5 (AVERAGE WAS 54, THUS 65%).  NANCY and HAIG REUNITED ON THIS EVENING AS A STRAT C PAIR, W/, IN FACT, THE FEWEST MASTER POINTS/EXPERIENCE IN THE N/S FIELD AND THE 2nd FEWEST IN THE ENTIRE GAME, AND HAD BY FAR THEIR MOST SPARKLING, BEST GAME EVER (W/ US) TO FINISH IN 2nd PLACE W/ A SCORE OF 67.5, ONE OF ONLY 3 SCORES THIS EVENING BETTER THAN 60% (ACTUALLY 62.5%).  OBVIOUSLY THEY ALSO WON BOTH STRATS B AND C, BUT THE AWARD FOR THEIR STRAT A FINISH WAS EASILY SUPERIOR.  BIG UPS TO BOTH OF YOU.  MarginOfVictory WAS EXACTLY 1/2 A BOARD.  3rd PLACE WENT TO VULNRABLEV (VALERIE) and ALPETE99 (AL) WHO HAD QUITE A FINE WEEK W/ US, HAVING FINISHED IN 2nd PLACE ON MONDAY EVENING AND, IN FACT, HAVE NOW SCRATCHED THE LAST 3 (CONSECUTIVE) TIMES THEY'VE PLAYED HERE.  THIS TIME THEY SCORED 60.5 (56%).  HERIKAN (PATTI) and GASTROMAN (MARK) CAME OFF THEIR MONDAY EVENING WIN BY AGAIN SCRATCHING, THIS TIME W/ A 2nd PLACE FINISH IN STRAT B BY WAY OF A SCORE OF 52 (48%).

CHECKING OUT THE WINNERS' PATH TO VICTORY MISOOK and DAN SCORED 4.5 MATCH POINTS ON BOARD #1 (6 WAS TOP THIS EVENING) ONLY BECAUSE THEIR OPPS SMARTLY STOPPED IN 3S (-1), WHEREAS AMY and LISA's OPPS (WHO SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER...THEY DID EVENTUALLY WIN E/W) PUSHED ON TO 4S (-2), AND AMY and LISA TOOK ADVANTAGE TO SCORE THE TOP.  AFTER THAT, MISOOK and DAN WERE NEVER AGAIN HEADED.  THEY WERE TIED FOR THE LEAD W/ NANCY and HAIG AFTER BOARD #2 W/ 8.5 POINTS EACH.  THE ULTIMATE WINNERS SOMEHOW MANAGED TO MAKE 12 TRIX AT 4H, WHEN NO ONE ELSE COULD DO BETTER THAN 11 AND MOST MADE ONLY 10 ON BOARD #3 FOR A PURE TOP, GIVING THEM THE LEAD ALL BY THEMSELVES BY 4 POINTS AT THE END OF ROUND 1.  THIS GREW TO 5 POINTS AT THE END OF ROUND 2, FOLLOWED BY A WHOPPING GAIN TO 13 POINTS AFTER ROUND 3, THE HALFWAY MARK.  THIS BY VIRTUE OF 16 POINTS (OUT OF A POSSIBLE 18, 89%) DURING THAT ROUND.  THIS WAS THEIR GREATEST LEAD OF THE EVENING, SINCE THEY HAD ONLY 1 BOARD AT OR BELOW AVERAGE AMONG THOSE FIRST 9, HAVING COMPILED 41.5 MATCH POINTS, OUT OF A POSSIBE 54 (77%).  THIS INCLUDED A HIGHLY UNLIKELY SLAM ON BOARD #9 THAT NO OTHER PAIR BID NOR DID ANY OTHER PAIR MAKE (A SIMILARLY UNLIKELY) 12 TRIX.  FROM THERE THEY COASTED WHILE NANCY and HAIG WERE MAKING A FINE RUSH (BUT ULTIMATELY TOO LITTLE TOO LATE) ON THE FINAL 3 ROUNDS, OUTSCORING THEM ON EACH OF THOSE 3 ROUNDS, NARROWING THE MARGIN TO 9 POINTS, THEN 7 POINTS ENTERING THE FINAL ROUND.  AFTER THEIR WORST ROUND (#2) OF THE EVENING, THEY ACCUMULATED 53.5 MATCH POINTS OUT OF A POSSIBLE 72 (74%) ON THE FINAL 4 ROUNDS.  ON BOARD 16 NANCY and HAIG PICKED UP 2.5 MORE POINTS AS THE ONLY PAIR TO BID AN UNLIKELY GAME, ALTHOUGH AT 5 TABLES, THOSE SAME 10 TRIX WERE MADE.  THEN THEY PICKED UP ANOTHER 1.5 POINTS ON BOARD #17 SOMEHOW HOLDING THEIR OPPS TO 10 TRIX AT 3NT WHEN MISOOK and DAN's OPPS (AND THOSE OF ONE OTHER PAIR) MANAGED 11.  THE LEAD WAS DOWN TO 3 POINTS ENTERING THE FINAL BOARD, BUT BOTH PAIRS WERE INVOLVED IN A 3 WAY TIE FOR TOP ON BOARD #18, GETTING TO 3NT AND MAKING AN UPTRICK, ACCOUNTING FOR THE FINAL MARGIN.

E/W WINNERS WERE (AGAIN) BMAC (BONNIE) and SIDNEY FOR THE 3rd TIME IN THE PAST 4 WEEKS (THEY WERE ONLY 3rd LAST WEEK AND IF ANY SCORING ERROR HAD OCCURRED, IT WAS NEVER DISCOVERED).  THEIR SCORE WAS, JUST AS IT HAD BEEN THE PREVIOUS 2 TIMES THEY'D WON, THE BEST IN "THE ROOM", THIS TIME 72 (67%).  JANICE and JERRYCOAK (JERRY CA) MOVED UP FROM 3rd PLACE ON MONDAY TO 2nd PLACE THIS EVENING.  THEY ARE BOTH 499er-QUALIFIED PLAYERS AND THEIR PARTNERSHIP HAS ONLY BEEN TOGETHER FOR ALL OF 3 GAMES TO THIS POINT.  THEIR SCORE WAS 64.5 (ROUNDED TO 60%), MAKING FOR AN MOV OF BARELY A PINCH MORE THAN A FULL BOARD.  JUST AS NANCY and HAIG HAD DONE, THEY ALSO TOOK 1st PLACE IN BOTH STRATS B AND C, AND THEIR STRAT A 2nd PLACE FINISH OFFERED A BETTER AWARD, WHICH IS WHAT THEY TOOK HOME.  THERE WAS TIE FOR 3rd/4th PLACE BETWEEN DAVID and BLAIR ALONG W/ MARILYN H and BILL WHO EACH SCORED 56.5 (52%).

BMACK and SIDNEY MADE AN UNCHARACTERISTIC FALSE START, SOMEHOW BIDDING TO AN AWFUL, UNMAKABLE GAME THAT ONLY ONE OTHER PAIR BID, THEN MAKING EVEN ONE TRICK FEWER THAN THE OTHER PAIR FOR A COLD 0.  MEANTIME MARILYN and BILL STARTED W/ ONLY AN AVERAGE (3) ON BOARD #1, BUT QUICKLY RALLIED TO A TOP ON BOARD #2, BY OUTBIDDING OPPS WHO MOSTLY BID TO UNMAKABLE CONTRACTS THAT MOSTLY MADE, THEN THEMSELVES MAKING THEIR OWN UNMAKABLE (3D) CONTRACT.  THIS GAVE THEM A 2 POINT LEAD WHICH THEY MAINTAINED THROUGH BOARD #3, SAW IT FALL TO 0.5 POINTS AFTER BOARD #4, THEN DISAPPEAR TO BMAC and SIDNEY WHO SCORED A TOP ON BOARD #5 BY MAKING 1 MORE TRICK THAN MOST, 2 MORE THAN A COUPLE IN SPADE CONTRACTS.  THIS GAVE THEM A 1 POINT LEAD, SURRENDERED BACK INTO A TIE ON BOARD #6 WHEN MARILYN and BILL WERE ALLOWED TO STEAL THE CONTRACT FOR 2S (AND EVEN MAKE IT).  MEANTIME OTHERS WERE EITHER FORCED TO BID TOO HIGH OR, AT 3 TABLES, WATCH THEIR OPPS GET TO AN UNLIKELY BUT, ONCE THERE, UNTOUCHABLE 4H CONTRACT.  BY THE START OF ROUND 3 HOWEVER, THE EVENTUAL WINNERS WERE BACK ON TOP AS MARILYN and BILL SUFFERED THROUGH AN AWFUL ROUND, EASILY THEIR WORST OF THE EVENING AT THE HANDS OF MISOOK and DAN WHO WERE REALLY ROLLING AND HAD THEIR BEST ROUND OF THE EVENING THERE.  BMAC and SIDNEY LED BY 7 POINTS AT THE HALFWAY MARK.  THAT HAD SLIPPED BACK TO 5 POINTS AFTER ROUND 4, BUT A 12.5 POINT ROUND 5 (69%) HAD REESTABLISHED THEIR LEAD TO AN EVENING HIGH OF 8.5 POINTS.  BOARD #16 SAW THE LEADERS AND THEIR CLOSEST COMPETITORS ALL SCORE THE SAME, 2.5 POINTS, THEN THERE WAS A BIT OF A SCARE FOR BMAC and SIDNEY ON BOARD #17 WHEN JANICE and JERRYCOAK WERE PERMITTED TO MAKE A TOP BY MAKING 11 TRIX AT AN UNMAKABLE 3NT CONTRACT, SUDDENLY REDUCING THE LEAD TO 4.5 POINTS.  BUT THE WINNERS CLOSED THE DOOR W/ A TOP ON BOARD #18 BY SETTING AN ICE-COLD 3NT CONTRACT THAT WAS REACHED AND MADE AT 4 OTHER TABLES.  THE OTHER 2 TABLES SAW N/S AT LEAST GO PLUS.  GAME, SET, AND MATCH, THANX FOR COMING, PLEASE DRIVE HOME SAFELY.

THIS EVENING'S COUNT SHOWS 8 PAIRS OF OPEN PLAYERS,  4 499er-QUALIFIED PAIRS AND 2 PAIRS CONSISTING OF 1 OF EACH.

THANX TO ALL WHO CAME TONIGHT, CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO PLAYED WELL ENOUGH AND HAD ENOUGH OF LADY'S LUCK TO HAVE SCRATCHED AND WE'LL LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING AS MANY OF YOU WHO CAN MAKE IT TO US MONDAY EVENING (SEPTEMBER 21), ALSO NEXT THURSDAY (SEPTEMBER 24)...TILL THEN...

W/ THAT, WE'LL ADD, AGAIN, HOW THRILLED WE ALL ARE W/ THE GROWTH OF THESE THURSDAY EVENING GAMES (NOT TO MENTION CONTINUED STRENGTH OF OUR BENCHMARK MONDAY EVENING ONES).  THANKS MUCH TO ALLSmile...WE'RE NOW LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT WEEK'S GAMES.  PLEASE CONTINUE TO STAY STRONG AND HEALTHY OK?...

WHAT FOLLOWS HERE IS ACTUALLY LEFT OVER FROM NOW QUITE A WHILE BACK, BUT W/ NOTHING BETTER TO DO W/ THE SPACE, SOMEHOW IT FEELS RIGHT TO LEAVE IT WHERE IT IS AS SOME SORT OF BRIDGE BETWEEN OUR FORMER PIEDMONT "LIVE" (FACE2FACE) LOCATION AND THIS "BRAVE NEW (VIRTUAL) WORLD" IN WHICH WE, FOR BETTAH OR FOR WORSER, NOW FIND OURSELVESSmile...

3 MORE SHOUT OUTS ARE CERTAINLY MERITED HERE.  FIRST TO (MARILYN) OUR VERY OWN BOOKBINDER AND HUBBY, MAROONED FOR 9 MORE DAYS AT TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, DUE TO POTENTIAL EXPOSURE TO THE C-VIRUS, WHILE TRAVELLING ALTHOUGH THERE SEEMS TO BE NO EVIDENCE THAT THEY ACTUALLY CONTRACTED IT.  REPORTS ARE THAT THIS IS NO FUN AND VERY PRISON-LIKE, ALTHOUGH DAUGHTER SOMEHOW MANAGED TO MAIL COMPUTERS AND A FEW OTHER ESSENTIALS TO THEM--THIS REPORTED BY PARTNER KC (KATHLEEN).

2nd TO DOC (COURTENAY) WHO NEVER SHOWED, AS EXPECTED, FOR OUR NEXT TO LAST GAME (MARCH 2) DUE TO HAVING FALLEN IN THE STREET W/ A BLOOD PRESSURE ISSUE.  LUCKILY HE WAS RESCUED BY A PASSERBY, THEY GOT HIM IN AN AMBULANCE TO A HOSPITAL AND, A WEEK LATER, SUNDAY BEFORE YESTERDAY, I TALKED TO HIM ON THE PHONE WHILE HE WAS AWAITING SON EVAN WHO WAS ON THE WAY TO PICK HIM UP TO BRING HIM HOME.  HIS PARTNER OTHER DOC (ANDY) REPORTED HAVING TALKED TO HIM A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO AND HE IS DOING OK, BUT NOT ABLE TO GO OUT OR DRIVE FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER MONTH OR SO NOW...ALL OUR BEST FOR SPEEDY RECOVERY...

ALSO, ADD ONE CHEERY NOTE IN THIS OTHERWISE VIRTUAL BLIZZARD OF BAD BRIDGE NEWS, MOST SPURRED OF COURSE BY THE FAR WORSE NEWS OF THE C-VIRUS, i.e. EVERY OTHER CLUB KNOWN (BY ME) IN THE AREA HAS NOW SHUT DOWN, EITHER VOLUNTARILY OR BECAUSE LANDLORD HAS REQUIRED THIS (AS IN OUR CASE, ALTHOUGH, I MIGHT HAVE FOUND A PATH TO DOING SO MYSELF, HAD PIEDMONT NOT DONE IT FOR US).  ALSO IT DOESN'T LOOK AS THOUGH ANY TOURNAMENTS WILL HAPPEN ANY TIME SOON, PRETTY MUCH ANYWHERE.  (AND NOW FOR THE ACTUAL CHEERY NOTE) IN THE LAST KNOWN GAME TO OCCUR, A GAME IN A SMALL, QUITE RUSTIC CLUB HOUSE IN A LOVELY PARK IN A NICE AREA OF EL CERRITO ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON, OUR VERY OWN MARCIA MATTON and OUR LONG-TIME AND RECENTLY, BUT APPARENTLY NO LONGER, VERY OWN SARLA PUROHIT TOOK 1st PLACE W/ A 61% GAME IN A FIELD OF MOSTLY MORE EXPERIENCED (AND HIGHER MASTER POINT HOLDING) PLAYERS.  WELL DONE, KIDS...WAY TO GO OUT W/ A BANG.

WE'LL CONCLUDE FOR NOW W/, AS ALWAYS OF COURSE, THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO CAME TO PLAY ON THE ABOVE DISCUSSED EVENING, SEEMINGLY AGES AGO, BUT IN REALITY, BARELY A WEEK AGO NOW.  AND CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO PLAYED WELL ENOUGH (AND/OR HAD ENOUGH OF LADY'S LUCK) TO SCRATCH...WELL DONE.  I FINISH TYPING THIS AND ABOUT TO "PUBLISH TO WEB" MONDAY MORNING (HAVING DONE MY VERY BEST TO TRY TO COMFORT AND HELP RELAX, VIA PHONE, DARLING DAUGHTER KELLY, CURRENTLY UNDERGOING EVEN MORE THAN HER USUAL ANXIETY AND PANIC ATTACKS, SITTING IN HER DORM AT MILLS COLLEGE IN EAST OAKLAND, FURIOUS AND SAD THAT HER CLASSES HAVE BEEN REDUCED TO ON-LINE AND, OF COURSE, NOT KNOWING WHAT TO MAKE OF CURRENT CLIMATE AND EVENTS--AS IS TRUE FOR ALL OF US, AS I TRY TO REASSURE HER.  ALSO HAVING FALLEN ASLEEP AMID TRYING TO DO ALL THIS PLUS KEEP UP W/ REPORTS FROM ESTEEMED D.(IANE)B.(ARTON)-P.(AINE), MY LONG-TIME FRIEND, BOSS AT TOURNAMENTS, AND MENTOR...ON VARIOUS (ALMOST ENTIRELY AWFUL) MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT REPORTS FROM, AROUND, AND ABOUT THE BRIDGE WORLD, IT IS NOW MID-MONDAY MORNING.  MUCH LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING Y'ALL A.S.A.P., ESPECIALLY FOR WHENEVER BRIDGE RETURNS TO US ALL.  ANNIE, THE ONLY ONE OF YOU I'M AT ALL LIKELY TO SEE ANY TIME SOON, DO HOPE TO SEE YOU IN EITHER THE STORE OR PARKING LOT OF W.F.--WHERE I'LL BE HEADING THE SECOND I PUT THIS TRUSTY LAP-TOP TO SOME WELL-DESERVED "SLEEP"--SO LONG AS THEY MAY (PLEASE GODDESSES) STAY OPEN (AND HAVE ANY FOOD THAT I AND ALL OF US WILL CERTAINLY NEED).

SO, TO ALL OF YOU THEN, TILL SOON, W/ ANY LUCK...STAY STRONG AND HEALTHY FOLKS AND PLEASE STAY TUNED HERE FOR RANDOM FURTHER REPORTS, I PROMISE, INCLUDING, SOONER, RATHER THAN LATER IF WE GET LUCKY, A REPORT OF AT LEAST SOME RETURN TO ALL OUR FAVORITE PAST-TIME.  PLEASE CONTINUE TO EAT AND SLEEP OFTEN AND WELL...
