Wednesdays

No Wednesday games for now.  If you would be interested in a Swiss Team Game or a Limited Pairs Game (499er, 299er, 199er, etc.) or a Limited Swiss Team Game, or any other type of game on Wednesday evenings, please speak to me (Doug) about it.  Or also please feel free to email me (dough0918@aol.com) or phone me (925:938-4493) about it (or about anything else, really).  If I can sense there is enough interest in a Wednesday game to make it work, we could certainly have one.

RESULTS FROM THIS WEEK'S GAME (MAY 14) POSTED HERE (ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THIS PAGE) @ 11:45.

NOW, IT IS 5 DAYS LATER (SATURDAY NIGHT, 2 NIGHTS PRIOR TO OUR NEXT GAME, MAY 21) AND HERE ARE THE NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS (BLOG) FROM THIS PAST MONDAY'S GAME (THE ABOVE REFERENCED MAY 14).

IN THE 499er GAME, N/S, RON and ARNE, (LIKE THE SWALLOWS TO CAPISTRANO??) RETURNED TO THE WINNER'S CIRCLE, THIS TIME LEADING A VERY COMPETITIVE AND CROWDED FIELD BY A SINGLE MATCH-POINT, SCORING 47 (AVERAGE WAS 40, SO THIS WAS 58.75%).  IN A NICE, BUT OH-SO-CLOSE 2nd PLACE FINISH, MARCEL HAWIGER and JOE FENDEL, SCORED 46 (OBVIOUSLY), 57.5%, THEIR 2nd CONSECUTIVE SUCH (OH-SO-CLOSE) FINISH, ALTHOUGH SEPARATED BY 2 WEEKS IN REAL TIME, BUT BY THE EXACT SAME MARGIN (1 MATCH POINT) AS 2 WEEKS AGO.  SINCE THEY WERE 1st IN STRAT B, THEY WILL AGAIN GET HALF-FREE PLAYS EACH, NEXT TIME THEY PLAY (JUST AS THEY ENJOYED THIS WEEK FROM THEIR SIMILAR RESULTS OF 2 WEEKS AGO).  AND ANOTHER MERE 2 MATCH-POINTS FURTHER BACK, AND SCRATCHING OUT 2nd PLACE IN STRAT B WERE ARTHUR and TOM G.  THEIR SCORE OF 44 WAS 55%.

E/W WINNERS THIS WEEK WERE KC (KATHLEEN) and OUR VERY OWN (MARILYN, THE) BOOKBINDER WHO SCORED A COMFORTABLE 5.5 MATCH-POINT MARGIN OF VICTORY, A 45.5 SCORE (57%), WINNING BY SLIGHTLY MORE THAN 1 1/4 BOARDS.  NEXT BEST WERE MAXINE and ERIC L. WHO DID THE DIFFICULT FEAT OF SCORING 50%, RIGHT ON THE BUTTON, NOT A SOUS MORE, NOR LESS (RAW SCORE, 40).  AGAIN THE "NE" NEXT TO THE NAMES OF LO-IE and HER PARTNER, STANDS FOR "NOT ELIGIBLE" (FOR MASTER-POINTS) HERE, AS THEY BOTH WERE WELL OVER THE 500 POINT LIMIT FOR THIS GAME.  MANY THANKS OF COURSE TO LO-IE FOR STAYING TO PLAY IN A GAME WHERE SHE COULDN'T WIN ANYTHING, WHEN SHE DISCOVERED ONLY AT GAME TIME THAT THERE HAD BEEN A PARTNERSHIP MIX-UP (NOT IN THE SLIGHTEST HER FAULT); OF COURSE BY BEING WILLING TO STAY TO PLAY, SHE SAVED 5 PAIRS FROM EACH HAVING HAD A 4 BOARD SIT-OUT, WHICH MEANT EACH WOULD HAVE HAD NOTHING TO DO FOR MORE THAN HALF AN HOUR.  AND, AS ALWAYS IN SUCH CIRCUMSTANCES, WE WOULDN'T HEAR OF COLLECTING TABLE-FEES FROM HER FOR THIS NIGHT, EVEN THOUGH SHE TRIED TO GIVE THEM TO US.

IN THE OPEN GAME, FOR THE 2nd CONSECUTIVE WEEK AND 3rd WEEK IN THE PREVIOUS 4, WE HAD YET ANOTHER TIE FOR THE WIN.  THIS HARDLY EVER HAPPENS, AT LEAST NOT NEARLY SO FREQUENTLY AS HAS BEEN THE CASE OVER THESE PAST 4 WEEKS.  IT ALL STARTED WHEN, 4 WEEKS AGO, THERE WAS NOT ONLY A TIE IN THE OPEN GAME, BUT ALSO 2 TIES IN THE 499er GAME, ONE IN EACH THE N/S DIRECTION AND ALSO THE E/W DIRECTION.  499ers HAVE NOT REPEATED SUCH FINISHES SINCE, BUT THIS TIME THE TIED OPEN GAME WINNERS WERE, FOR ONE, LILI and MARCIA, ACTUALLY A 2nd CONSECUTIVE HIGH FINISH FOR THEM, AN EXCELLENT FEAT, GIVEN THAT MOST OF THE PLAYERS W/ WHOM THEY ARE COMPETING IN THIS GAME HAVE AT LEAST DOUBLE OR TRIPLE THE AMOUNT OF MASTER-POINTS (i.e. EXPERIENCE) THAT LILI and MARCIA HAVE, AND IN A COUPLE OF CASES CONSIDERABLY MORE THAN THAT.  THE OTHER TIED PAIR WAS JIM S. and JAMES.  EACH OF THESE WORTHIES TURNED IN SCORES OF 28.5 (57%) TO TAKE IN ALL THE GOODIES IN THIS EVENT.

SO, NICELY DONE ALL, IN BOTH GAMES.

NO FIRST-TIMERS TONIGHT BUT A MOST HEARTY WELCOME BACK (FROM THE EAST COAST), BOB JOERGER, WHO RENEWED HIS PREVIOUS PARTNERSHIP W/ BC (BONNIE).  MY BRAIN TELLS ME BOB HAILS FROM BALTIMORE, BUT HIS DATA BASE INFO SAYS HE'S FROM NEW JERSEY...POSSIBLY BOTH MIGHT BE TRUE IN VARIOUS FORMS.  IN ANY CASE, HE VISITS US PERIODICALLY HAVING AT LEAST ONE DAUGHTER IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, IF MEMORY SERVES, AND EITHER SOMEONE OR SOMETHING ELSE HERE IN THE BAY AREA (ANOTHER CHILD, OR POSSIBLY OTHER RELATIVE OR ACQUAINTANCES) THAT WILL KEEP HIM HERE FOR SEVERAL WEEKS.  OF COURSE WE'RE ALL GLAD OF THAT, AS HE IS A HALE AND HEARTY FELLOW, WELL MET, W/ GOOD INTENTIONS AND HAD CHAIRS SET UP FOR ALMOST THE ENTIRE 499er GAME BY THE TIME I EMERGED FROM THE KITCHEN TO TELL HIM THAT, IN SPITE OF HIS KINDNESS, IT'S GOOD IF PLAYERS, ABOUT TO SIT STILL FOR THE ENTIRE NIGHT, AT LEAST GET THE TEENSY EXERCISE OF GETTING THEIR OWN CHAIRS...AND ALSO THAT IF HE WAS GOING TO WORK SO HARD, I'D HAVE TO PUT HIM ON THE PAYROLL...AND IF I DID THAT, I'D HAVE TO COLLECT WITH-HOLDING FROM HIM...AND SURELY HE WOULDN'T WANT THAT.  IN ANY CASE, WE ALWAYS APPRECIATE SUCH THOUGHTFULNESS AS HE ALWAYS EXHIBITS AND WE'RE HAPPY HE'LL BE HERE FOR A PRETTY DECENT STRETCH THIS TIME.

WE WERE THINKING WE'D HAVE NANCY BACK W/ US FROM HER LONG TRIP TO EUROPE...THAT IS UNTIL WE SAW WARRIORS PLAYOFF SCHEDULE, WHICH KEPT HER AND A FEW OTHERS FROM PLAYING ON THIS NIGHT.  ALSO HOPING TO SEE LISA BACK AS WELL FROM A SIMILAR JOURNEY, BUT I BELIEVE SHE HAD A FAMILY EVENT TO WHICH TO ATTEND, SO HOPEFULLY BOTH OF THEM WILL REJOIN US AS WELL AS WARRIOR FANS THIS WEEK.

AS USUAL, MANY HEARTFELT THANKS TO ALL WHO DID SHOW UP AND CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO PLAYED WELL ENOUGH TO SCRATCH SOME MASTER-POINTS.  WE'LL LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING AS MANY OF Y'ALL AS CAN MAKE IT THIS MONDAY NIGHT, OK?  TILL THEN...

Fridays

If you need to phone Doug at Vet's Bldg. (playing site), you can use 510:652-2587 (no voicemail, so it works only after about 7:10 pm--on game nights).  NO FRIDAY GAMES FOR NOW.

RESULTS NOW POSTED HERE (IN THE COLUMN TO THE FAR LEFT, OF COURSE, AS USUAL) FOR THIS WEEK'S (MAY 21GAME. IT IS CURRENTLY 11:45 pm

NO TIME TO WRITE NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS (BLOG) FOR THIS GAME NOW, BUT WILL DO SO LATER IN THE WEEK.  FOR NOW, THE BLOG FROM 2 WEEKS AGO (REGARDING GAME OF MAY 7) REMAINS BELOW, FOR LACK OF ANYTHING BETTER TO DO W/ THE SPACE.  IT WILL GO AWAY WHEN I GET TIME TO POST A MORE CURRENT ONE FOR THE GAME JUST COMPLETED (REFERRED TO ABOVE AS GAME OF MAY 21).  THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE.  TILL LATER...

IN THE 499er GAME, N/S, PARTNERSHIP DESK PAIRED A COUPLE OF FOLKS THAT I DON'T BELIEVE HAD PLAYED TOGETHER BEFORE, BC (BONNIE) and TOM G., EACH OF WHOSE REGULAR CURRENT PARTNERS WERE AWAY OR COULDN'T MAKE IT, AND LO AND BEHOLD, NOT ONLY DID THEY WIN, THEY HAD QUITE A BIG GAME AND WERE, IN FACT, THE ONLY N/S PAIR TO FINISH ABOVE THE 50% LINE.  THEIR RAW SCORE WAS 50 (AVERAGE WAS 40, THUS THIS WAS A 62.5% GAME), OUTDISTANCING THEIR CLOSEST PURSUERS BY 2 1/2 BOARDS.  THOSE CLOSEST PURSUERS WERE 2nd PLACERS PAT and LEO, WHO DID INDEED SCORE EXACTLY 40 (EXACTLY 50%).  THE GOOD NEWS WAS THAT THIS CONFIGURATION LED TO NONE OF THE OTHER PAIRS HAVING A PARTICULARLY BAD GAME (NONE WERE AT 40% OR LOWER).  ALSO PLACING, A MEASLE HALF MATCH-POINT BEHIND PAT and LEO, MEANING THEY HAD A SCORE OF 39.5 (49%), WERE DRM (DR. MAROLYN) and RICHARD WHO THEREBY ACHIEVED 2nd PLACE IN STRAT B.

E/W: KAREN ALDRIDGE and CONNIE CHANG, ALSO PAIRED FOR THE EVENING VIA THE PARTNERSHIP DESK, TOOK TOP HONORS W/ A SCORE OF 48.5 (61%).  THIS WAS 1 1/4 BOARDS AHEAD OF 2nd PLACERS, MAXINE and ERIC LINDQUIST WHO POSTED A SCORE OF 43.5 (54%).  THIS WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO JUST SQUEAK BY HELENE and JOHN V. BY A SINGLE MATCH-POINT (THE LATTER SCORED 42.5, 53%), GOOD ENOUGH TO SCRATCH W/ 2nd PLACE IN STRAT C.  WELL DONE ALL!!!

IN THE OPEN GAME, A VERY LIVELY CONTEST ENSUED W/ 10 PAIRS BATTLING IN A HOWELL MOVEMENT (EVERY PAIR PLAYED THE EXACT SAME 24 BOARDS AS EVERY OTHER PAIR, AND ALSO PLAYED AGAINST EVERY OTHER PAIR, SAVE ONE, AT SOME POINT DURING THE EVENING).  FINAL RESULTS, A DELAYED DECISION OF A TIE, SAID DELAY CAUSED BY YOUR INTREPID SCORER/DIRECTOR, FILLING IN FOR THE FIRST ROUND W/ PARTNERS "BORROWED" FROM THE 499er GAME, A BOARD W/ DRM, THEN ONE W/ ONE OF TWO OTHER MARILYNs, SITTING ALL IN A ROW AT N/S TABLES #2,3, AND 4, THIS ONE THE (OUR VERY OWN) BOOKBINDER, FOLLOWED BY YET ONE MORE (AT LEAST FOR THE AUCTION PART) W/ DRM, EACH OF WHOM, ALONG W/ THEIR RESPECTIVE PARTNERS, RICHARD and KC WERE MOST GRACIOUS ENOUGH TO ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN TO PREVENT A SIT-OUT OR LATE PLAY FOR TWO PAIRS IN THE OPEN GAME.  WHAT HAPPENED WAS, YOUR DIRECTOR/SCORER (MOI) WAS DISTRACTED ENOUGH TO MANGLE A BOARD AND NOT WANTING TO SADDLE THE IN-COMING FILL-IN PAIR, DEB and WAYNE (ALSO GRACIOUS ENOUGH TO HELP US OUT), W/ SUCH AN AWFUL SCORE IN NO WAY THEIR FAULT, THEY WERE TOLD THEY WOULD BE AWARDED A PERCENT OF GAME SCORE, RATHER THAN THE ALMOST SURE ZERO MY BONE-HEAD PLAY WOULD HAVE ASSIGNED TO THEM.  ONLY IN THE HASTE TO SCORE THE GAME, I ORIGINALLY FORGOT TO DO THAT.  HOWEVER AFTER ALL PLAYERS HAD GONE HOME THINKING SIDNEY and HANK HAD EEKED OUT A HALF-POINT VICTORY OVER GLENN and DAVID GEARY I REMEMBERED I NEEDED TO ADJUST THAT BOARD I'D MANGLED IN A WAY TO BE FAIR TO BOTH PAIRS INVOLVED, WHICH, VIA THE MYSTERIES OF MATCH-POINTING, LOWERED SIDNEY and HANK's SCORE BY EXACTLY THAT HALF MATCH-POINT, THUS CREATING THE TIE BETWEEN THOSE TWO PAIRS (YES, EVEN THOUGH NEITHER PAIR WAS ACTUALLY INVOLVED IN THE MANGLED BOARD).  BOTH PAIRS WERE QUITE GRACIOUS AND UPON BEING NOTIFIED VIA EMAIL FROM ME, EVEN BEFORE THE RESULTS HAD BEEN POSTED, CAUSE I DIDN'T WANT THEM WONDERING WHY THE RESULTS HAD CHANGED IN THE FEW MINUTES SINCE THEY'D LEFT THE PLAYING SITE, AND BOTH PAIRS ACCEPTED THE CHANGES W/ PROPS TO EACH OTHER AND ACCEPTANCE OF THE CHANGE.  EACH OF THOSE TWO PAIRS WOUND UP W/ SCORES OF 59 (48 WAS AVERAGE, THUS 61%).  GOOD THING FOR THEM, BECAUSE NOT VERY FAR BEHIND WERE UP AND COMING STRAT C PAIR (EACH OF WHOM HAS BARE FRACTIONS OF THE AMOUNTS OF MASTER-POINTS COMING INTO THE GAME ATTAINED BY ANY OF THE PLAYERS IN THE TWO PAIRS WHO TIED FOR THE WIN) MARCIA and LILI WHO POSTED THE STRONG SCORE OF 57.38 (ROUNDED TO 60%) FOR 3rd PLACE, MARGIN OF VICTORY BEING LESS THAN HALF A BOARD.  AND LESS THAN ANOTHER FULL MATCHPOINT BEHIND THEM WERE THE 4th PLACE PAIR, THE DOCS (COURTENAY and ANDY) WHOSE SCORE WAS 56.5 (59%).  ALSO PLACING, 4th IN STRAT B, WERE NEWLY-RETURNED FROM LONG TRAVELS ABROAD THE REAL (DOUG) and PARTNER GISH W/ AN ALSO DECENT (SCRATCHING) SCORE OF 53 (55%).

SO THAT'S ABOUT IT FOR THIS NIGHT.  BUT IN ADDITION TO DEB and WAYNE, THANKS ALSO TO CONNIE FOR (ALSO) AGAIN FILLING IN FOR US, ALLOWING US TO PLAY W/ NO SIT-OUTS AND DIRECTOR ABLE TO BEST ATTEND TO HIS DUTIES, NOT HAVING TO PLAY TO FILL-IN.  AND THANKS ALSO, OF COURSE, AND AS USUAL, TO ALL WHO CAME OUT TO PLAY W/ US ON THIS NIGHT AND PROPS (AGAIN) TO THOSE (ABOVE-NAMED) WHO PLAYED WELL ENOUGH TO SCRATCH SOME MASTER-POINTS.  DO LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING Y'ALL AND ALL OTHERS WHO CAN MAKE IT BACK AGAIN TOMORROW NIGHT, NOW ALMOST EXACTLY 24 HOURS AWAY.  TILL THEN...
