Wednesdays

No Wednesday games for now.  If you would be interested in a Swiss Team Game or a Limited Pairs Game (499er, 299er, 199er, etc.) or a Limited Swiss Team Game, or any other type of game on Wednesday evenings, please speak to me (Doug) about it.  Or also please feel free to email me (dough0918@aol.com) or phone me (925:938-4493) about it (or about anything else, really).  If I can sense there is enough interest in a Wednesday game to make it work, we could certainly have one.

RESULTS FROM TONIGHT'S GAME (JANUARY 14) POSTED HERE (ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THIS PAGE) @ 11:30 pm.  WILL NOW (ON THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY EVENING) GET TO OUR NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS (THE BLOG).

IN THE 499er SECTION N/S WINNERS FOR THE 2nd WEEK IN A ROW (CONSECUTIVELY) WERE KAREN and JERRY, THIS WEEK CLOCKING IN W/ A SCORE OF 46 (AVERAGE WAS 40, SO THIS IS 57.5%).  MarginOfVictory WAS 1/2 OF A BOARD, THUS FAIRLY TIGHTLY CONTESTED, OVER 2nd PLACERS BERT and BRUNO, THE LATTER AGAIN CHUGGING IN FROM FAR-AWAY SAN RAMON TO HELP US OUT AND EVEN OUT THE POTENTIAL SIT-OUT PROBLEM.  THEY SCORED 44 (55%).

E/W WINNERS WERE ARNITA and ELAINE WHO PUT TOGETHER A SCORE OF 44.5 (56%) TO WIN BY JUST UNDER 1 1/2 BOARDS.  2nd PLACERS THIS TIME WERE HELENE and JOHN V. WHOSE SCORE WAS 39 (49%).  CAREFUL READERS WILL NOTICE THAT ANOTHER PAIR IN THIS SECTION HAD A HIGHER SCORE BUT WERE "NE" (NOT ENTERED) DUE TO ONE OF THOSE PLAYERS HAVING TOO MANY MASTER-POINTS TO BE ALLOWED TO WIN ANY (MORE) POINTS IN THIS GAME.  I HAPPENED TO NOTICE HIS PARTER BOB J. HAPPENED TO MAKE SOME RATHER AGRESSIVE BIDS, THEN FOUND THE CARDS SITTING WELL ENOUGH (AND HE MAXIMIZED PLAYING THEM WELL ENOUGH) TO BRING HOME SEVERAL OF THOSE CONTRACTS THAT WERE BETTER, AS IT TURNED OUT, THAN MANY OR MOST OF THE OTHER COMPETITORS REACHED W/ THE SAME HOLDINGS.  SO CONGRATS AND PROPS TO BOB FOR HIS EFFORT.  TURNED OUT HIS HIGH-POINT-HOLDING PARTNER DIDN'T CONTRIBUTE ALL THAT MUCH TO THE GOOD SCORES THEY HAD, BUT HE DID MUCH ENJOY WATCHING (GO) BOB (GO), WHENEVER HE WAS AT THE TABLE, NOT ATTENDING TO OTHER DUTIES.  BUT UNFORTUNATELY THEY STILL HAD TO BE "NOT ENTERED" IN TERMS OF MASTER POINT AWARDS.

CHECKING IN ON THE OPEN SECTION ON THIS NIGHT, IT BECAME APPARENT THAT A PHENONENON SIMILAR TO THAT OF LAST WEEK OCCURRED IN THAT MOST OF THE MASTER-POINTS IN BOTH SECTIONS WERE AGAIN WON BY STRAT C PLAYERS, THOSE W/ FEWER MASTER POINTS AND LESS EXPERIENCE, IN MANY CASES CONSIDERABLY SO, THAN THOSE PLAYERS WHO FELL, BY VIRTUE OF THOSE MASTER POINT HOLDINGS, INTO STRATS A AND B.  THE N/S WINNER IN THE 499er SECTION AS WELL AS THE WINNERS IN THE OPEN WERE BOTH STRAT B PAIRS, BUT THE E/W 499er WINNERS AS WELL AS EVERY SINGLE OTHER PAIR WHO SCRATCHED, IN BOTH SECTIONS, WERE INDEED ALL STRAT C PAIRS.

IN THE OPEN, ANOTHER, THIS TIME INCREDIBLY CLOSELY FOUGHT PHOTO-FINISH/RAZOR-THIN MARGIN OF A SCRAMBLE FOUND (THE REAL) DOUG and GISH EMERGING AS VICTORS, ALTHOUGH THAT RESULT WASN'T ASSURED UNTIL TALLY OF THE LAST BOARD BEING PLAYED HAD BEEN COMPLETED.  THE MOV COULD HARDLY HAVE BEEN SLIMMER, A MEASLE/MERE HALF MATCH POINT WOUND UP SEPARATING THE WINNERS FROM A PAIR OF OTHER PAIRS WHO THUS TIED FOR 2nd/3rd.  THE WINNERS SCORED 56 (AVERAGE WAS 48), MAKING THEIRS A 58.33% GAME.  AND TIED FOR RUNNERS-UP POSITIONS WERE LISA and FOSTER, ALSO RON and ARNE, EACH W/ SCORES OF 55.5 (57.81%).  AGAIN, THESE 2 PAIRS EACH HAVE FAR LESS EXPERIENCE THAN NOT ONLY THE PAIR THAT JUST EKED BY THEM FOR THE WIN, BUT ALSO ALL THE OTHER STRATS A AND B PAIRS IN THE GAME, 6 OF THE REMAINING ONES.  ALSO SCRATCHING WERE AMY and RUSS, YES, ANOTHER STRAT C PAIR.  THEIR SCORE OF 52.5 (54.69%) WAS JUST A SINGLE MATCH POINT BIG ENOUGH TO EARN THEM THE 4th PLACE AWARD OVER 2 OTHER (NON STRAT C) PAIRS.  SO CONGRATS TO ALL THESE PAIRS, W/ SPECIAL PROPS, OF COURSE, TO THE STRAT Cers.

NO FIRST TIMERS TONIGHT.  COUNTY COUNT WAS, I BELIEVE, 9 OF THE 44 PAIRS ENTERED, JUST MORE THAN 20%, TRAVELLED TO US FROM OUTSIDE ALAMEDA COUNTY.

AGAIN, MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO CAME IN TO PLAY AND WE'LL LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING AS MANY OF Y'ALL WHO CAN MAKE IT IN FOR OUR NEXT GAME, 2 NIGHTS FROM THIS WRITING, MONDAY (JAN 21), OF COURSE.  TILL THEN...

Fridays

If you need to phone Doug at Vet's Bldg. (playing site), you can use 510:652-2587 (no voicemail, so it works only after about 7:10 pm--on game nights).  NO FRIDAY GAMES FOR NOW...

SCORES FROM TONIGHT'S (JANUARY 21) GAME ARE POSTED IN THE FAR LEFT COLUMN, AS USUAL, AND THEY WERE PUT UP @ 11:30 pm.  NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS (BLOG) WILL BE POSTED LATER IN THE WEEK.  AS USUAL (FOR LACK OF ANYTHING BETTER TO DO W/ THE SPACE), WE'LL LEAVE THE BLOG FROM 2 WEEKS AGO UP...BELOW...STARTING RIGHT NOW!!

IN THE 999er GAME (DEFINITELY A ONE-TIME THING, BORN OUT OF NECESSITY...AND YOU PROBABLY DON'T WANT TO ASK FOR FEAR OF HAVING TO LISTEN TO ANOTHER OF MY LONG-WINDED EXPLANATIONS), N/S WINNERS WERE KAREN and JERRY, THE FORMER JUST BACK FROM HER YEARLY TREK BACK TO HOMELAND SOUTH AFRICA TO SEE FAMILY THERE, THE LATTER STILL RECOVERING SURELY FROM HAVING RECENTLY LOST A CLOSE FAMILY MEMBER.  THEY SCORED 47.63 (AVERAGE WAS 40, SO THIS ROUNDED UP TO 60%) AND THEIR MarginOfVictory OVER THE NEXT BEST SCORING PAIR WAS SLIGHTLY MORE THAN HALF A BOARD.

BUT THEIR VICTORY WAS JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG OF A RATHER REMARKABLE EVENING FROM A "SCORING TRIVIA" STANDPOINT (AND REGULAR READERS MUST SURELY KNOW NOW THAT IF NOTHING ELSE, I AM ALL ABOUT "SCORING TRIVIA").  MEANING, THIS WAS A VERY TRIUMPHANT EVENING OVERALL FOR STRAT C PLAYERS, THOSE WHO, AT THIS POINT IN TIME, HAVE FEWER MASTER-POINTS AND THUS, IN GENERAL, LESS PLAYING EXPERIENCE AND FEWER SUCCESSES THAN THOSE W/ MORE MASTER-POINTS, HENCE MORE EXPERIENCE. GIVEN THE MASTER-POINT HOLDINGS OF ALL WHO CAME TO PLAY IN THIS GAME ON THIS NIGHT, KAREN and JERRY WERE DULY SLOTTED INTO STRAT C...SIMILAR TO AND AS WERE ALSO THE E/W WINNERS, BUT WE'LL GET TO THEM IN A MOMENT.  CONTINUING W/ N/S FIELD, THAT 2nd PLACE PAIR TONIGHT WERE THE REDOUBTABLE MARILYN T. and JEFF WHOSE SCORE WAS 45.38 (57%).  THAT SCORE WAS JUST BARELY ENOUGH TO HOLD OFF KC (KATHLEEN) and MARILYN (OUR VERY OWN BOOKBINDER), ANOTHER STRAT C PAIR, BTW, WHOSE SCORE OF 45.03 (56%) EARNED THEM THE AWARD FOR 2nd PLACE IN STRAT C.

MOVING NOW TO THE E/W FIELD, THE AFOREMENTIONED WINNERS HERE WERE TOM G. and ARTHUR WHO HAD THE REALLY " BIG GAME" SCORE OF 50.63 (63%).  THIS PROVIDED AN MOV FOR THEM OF SLIGHTLY LESS THAN A BOARD AND A HALF...OVER "NEWCOMER" (ALTHOUGH NOT A TRUE FIRST-TIMER W/ US...MORE ABOUT HER IN A BIT) KATHY MORENO PAIRED FOR THIS NIGHT W/ JON ATKINSON, OUR INTREPID "SLEEP CONSULTANT" (EMAIL ADDRESS, HENCE WORKING TITLE) ON LOAN TO US FROM HIS NATIVE OHIO.  LOIS, W/ WHOM HE'D PLAYED THE SEVERAL OTHER TIMES HE'S PLAYED W/ US SINCE HE ARRIVED ON OUR SUNNY SHORES, TURNED UP SICK AND THUS UNABLE TO MAKE IT "TO THE POST" TONIGHT...(OF COURSE WE ALL WISH HER A SPEEDY RETURN TO HEALTH).  THEIR SCORE WAS 44.88 (56%).  KATHY HAS, IN FACT, PLAYED W/ US PREVIOUSLY, ALTHOUGH NOT FOR SEVERAL YEARS, ENOUGH SO THAT IT WAS PRIOR TO WHEN I SOMEHOW MAGICALLY (AND MOST STUPIDLY) DELETED ALL OUR PREVIOUS ELECTRONIC RESULTS AND DATA BASE (EARLY 2015).  AS FOR JON, WE WILL BE LOSING HIM FOR AT LEAST A COUPLE OF MONTHS...HE VOWED HE'D BE BACK ON THE JOB (AND HENCE W/ US AS WELL) IN MARCH, SO WE'LL HOPE FOR THAT.  ALSO PLACING IN THIS FIELD WERE JANIS and NANCY, ALSO PROVING TO BE EVER MORE REDOUBTABLE (AND CONSISTENT).  THEY SCORED 42.88 (54%), GOOD, ALSO, FOR 2nd PLACE IN STRAT B (E/W VERSION).

IN THE OPEN GAME, AND HERE'S WHERE THE STRAT C PHENOMENON REALLY TOOK SHAPE, A VERY CLOSE RACE TOOK PLACE W/ (STRAT C PAIR) BC (BONNIE) STEPPING (WAY) UP, POINTS/EXPERINCE-WISE, TO PLAY IN THIS OPEN GAME W/ DAVEY C. (CARTWRIGHT) AND FASHIONING A NICE WIN (AND FOOLING THE VEGAS ODDSMAKERS) BY SCORING 54.5 (AVERAGE IN THIS GAME TONIGHT WAS 48, HENCE 57%).  THIS WAS GOOD FOR EXACTLY A HALF BOARD MOV OVER 2nd PLACERS LISA and FOSTER, OH YES, BTW, ANOTHER STRAT C PAIR, SCORING 52.5 (55%).  FINALLY 3rd PLACE WENT TO ARNE and RON, YOU GUESSED IT, ONE MORE STRAT C PAIR AND, IN CASE YOU WEREN'T WELL APPRISED OF THIS, ALSO FAIRLY RECENT TRANSPLANTS FROM THE 499er SECTION, WHERE THEY HAD LITERALLY DOMINATED IN PREVIOUSLY UNATTAINED FASHION AND RESULTS OVER SEVERAL YEARS' TIME.  THEY SCORED 51 (53%).

OH AND ANOTHER BTW, RON WAS THE ONLY ONE ASTUTE ENOUGH TO NOTICE (OR AT LEAST TO POINT OUT TO ME, ALBEIT THE NEXT DAY, AFTER THE FACT) THE SCORING ERROR ON BOARD #17 WHERE EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US (INCLUDING ME) FAILED TO NOTICE THAT ALL 5 RESULTS WERE LISTED AS 4S BY EAST, MAKING 6, FOR -480, ONLY ALL 5 SCORERS PUT THAT SCORE IN THE N/S SCORE COLUMN.  EVEN HE (SITTING NORTH) HAD PLAYED "MONKEY SEE/MONKEY DO" AND ORIGINALLY HAD FOLLOWED ALONG W/ EVERY SINGLE OTHER PLAYER, BOTH DIRECTIONS, WHO EITHER FOLLOWED THE PREVIOUS SCORERS OR ELSE THE PREVIOUS E/W OBSERVERS BY CAUSING OR PERMITTING THIS ERROR TO OCCUR WHEN THEY PLAYED THE BOARD.  IN FAIRNESS, RON (and ARNE) PLAYED THIS BOARD ON ITS LAST ROUND, SO HAD 4 OTHER INCORRECT SCORES TO COPY-CAT.  HA-HA, LOL...THE GOOD NEWS WAS, SINCE ALL 5 TABLES PLAYED THE BOARD TO THE EXACT SAME RESULT, NO ONE'S MATCH-POINTS (HENCE FINAL SCORES OR PLACINGS) CHANGED FROM THE ORIGINAL MONDAY NIGHT POSTING AS A RESULT OF HAVING CORRECTED THIS ERROR THE FOLLOWING DAY.

OH, AND, OK, WE'LL GIVE A FEW PROPS AS WELL TO AN ACTUAL STRAT B PAIR, WHO WERE THE ONLY OTHER TO SCRATCH TONIGHT, JAMES SQUARED (JAMES and JIM) TAKING 4th PLACE W/ A SCORE OF 49.5 (52%).

THUS DEFINITE ANTI-PERCENTAGE RESULTS IN THE OPEN SECTION WHERE 3 OF THE 4 PAIRS WHO SCRATCHED WERE STRAT C, ONLY SLIGHTLY LESS ANTI-PERCENTAGE IN THE LIMITED GAME, WHERE 3 OF THE 6 SCRATCHING PAIRS WERE STRAT C.  NO OTHER FIRST-TIMERS TONIGHT (AND KATHY WAS TECHNICALLY NOT ONE OF THOSE EITHER, ALTHOUGH SHE WAS NEW TO MOST WHO PLAYED IN THE GAME ON THIS NIGHT.  AND, AS ALWAYS, OUR THANKS (AGAIN) TO CONNIE WHO WAS HER USUAL GOODNESS-OF-SELF ENOUGH TO COME DOWN TO FILL-IN AND PROVIDE A LAST MINUTE PARTNER AND PREVENT A SIT-OUT.

COUNTY COUNT REVEALS A RELATIVELY SMALL PERCENTAGE OF NON-ALAMEDA COUNTY FOLKS W/ US TONIGHT, 8 OUT OF 44, ABOUT 18% AND THANKS TO THEM FOR TAKING TO THE (MEAN?) STREETS TO COME SEE US AND TO PLAY.

BUT OF COURSE WE SAY, AS ALWAYS, THANKS ALSO TO ALL THE REST OF YOU WHO CAME TO PLAY W/ US ON THIS NIGHT AND PROPS AND CONGRATS TO THOSE OF YOU WHO ALSO PLAYED WELL ENOUGH TO SCRATCH AND EARN MASTER POINTS.  THIS IS (SOMEWHAT MIRACULOUSLY AND ATYPICALLY) BEING WRITTEN AS EARLY AS FRIDAY EVENING (WORKING S.F. SECTIONAL ALL WEEK END, DO HOPE TO SEE MANY OF YOU THERE).  SO WE'LL LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING AS MANY OF YOU AS POSSIBLE BACK IN PIEDMONT 3 NIGHTS FROM NOW.  TILL THEN...
