Wednesdays

No games on this night any more, at least for now...If enough of you express an interest in renewing any sort of game, team game, limited game, i.e. 499er or the like, we can revisit the issue and stick our toes in the water to measure the interest, then make a decision about that...

NO WEDNESDAY GAMES FOR NOW...

RESULTS FROM TONIGHT'S (NOVEMBER 11) GAME ARE POSTED IN THE FAR LEFT COLUMN @ 11:30 pm.  NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS (BLOG) SHOULD HAVE BEEN POSTED LAST NIGHT (SUNDAY NOVEMBER 17) BUT I FOULED UP THE SITE (FELL ASLEEP WHILE HOLDING THE DELETE KEY TO ERASE PREVIOUS BLOG).  TOM PAJAK, BLESS HIS HEART, FIXED IT ALL FOR US EARLIER TODAY AS SOON AS HE'D HEARD ABOUT THE PROBLEM...SO BLOG FOR THIS GAME WILL BE A COUPLE OF DAYS LATE NOW, APPEARING EITHER LATE TUESDAY OR SOMETIME ON WEDNESDAY...SORRY ABOUT THAT.  WHAT IS BELOW ARE A FEW BITS AND PIECES, REMAINDER FROM PREVIOUS BLOG WHICH I DIDN'T ENTIRELY DELETE, CAUSE I MIGHT USE SOME OF THOSE SAME WORDS AGAIN, BUT W/OUT PROPER CONTEXT, THEY MAKE NO SENSE A-TALL, SO THERE WOULDN'T BE MUCH USE IN EVEN LOOKING AT THEM (FYI).

NO FIRST TIMERS TONIGHT.  COUNTY COUNT REVEALS  OF YOU  PLAYERS (%) CAME TO PLAY W/ US ON THIS NIGHT FROM OUTSIDE ALAMEDA COUNTY, ALL FROM CONTRA COSTA.  THANKS TO ALL OF YOU. AND FINALLY, MANY THANKS (AGAIN AND OF COURSE) TO ALL WHO CAME TO PLAY ON THIS NIGHT AND CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO MANAGED TO PAIR LADY LUCK W/ GOOD TECHNIQUE AND THUS SCRATCH.  WE ABSOLUTELY DO HOPE TO SEE ANY AND ALL OF YOU OUT THERE WHO CAN MAKE IT IN TO PLAY AT OUR NEXT GAME, TOMORROW, MONDAY NIGHT, OK?  TILL THEN, THEN...

Fridays

If you need to phone Doug at Vet's Bldg. (playing site), you can use 510:652-2587 (no voicemail, so it works only after about 7:10 pm--on game nights).

NO FRIDAY GAMES FOR NOW...

RESULTS FROM TONIGHT'S (NOVEMBER 18) GAME ARE POSTED IN THE FAR LEFT COLUMN AT 11:45 pm.  NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS (BLOG) WILL BE POSTED HERE MUCH LATER IN THE WEEK, AFTER I GET BLOG FROM LAST WEEK WRITTEN AND POSTED, WHICH IT WASN'T LAST NIGHT, WHEN IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN, BUT FOR MY ACCIDENT W/ THE WEB-PAGE.  SO FOR NOW, AS USUAL THE BLOG BELOW, NOW A WEEK OLD, BUT ACTUALLY FROM THE GAME 2 WEEKS AGO, WILL REMAIN THERE, FOR LACK OF ANYTHING BETTER TO DO W/ THAT SPACE.  THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR PATIENCE W/ THIS LATEST MIS-STEP ON MY PART...

STARTING W/ THE 749ers, WINNERS MOSTLY SEPARATED THEMSELVES FROM THE REST OF THEIR RESPECTIVE FIELDS BY RELATIVELY HEALTHY MARGINS IN BOTH DIRECTIONS ON THIS NIGHT.  N/S IT WAS ACTUALLY THE TOP TWO PAIRS WHO SEPARATED THEMSELVES.  THE WINNERS MIGHT HAVE BEEN A FIRST TIME PAIRING, BUT IF NOT, A RARE PAIRING MADE AS EACH HAD REGULAR PARTNERS UNABLE TO MAKE IT TO US.  MAXINE and JEFF SCORED 51.5 (AVERAGE WAS 40 SO THIS TRANSLATED TO A 64% GAME).  ALSO W/ A GOOD HEALTHY GAME WERE 2nd PLACE FINISHERS LILI and MARCIA, BOTH OF WHOM WERE KIND ENOUGH TO MOVE FROM THE OPEN GAME DOWN TO THIS GAME TO ACCOMODATE THE FACT THAT OTHERWISE, WE WOULD HAVE HAD A HALF-TABLE IN EACH GAME, MEANING A ROUND OF SIT-OUTS FOR ABOUT 2/3 OF THE PAIRS IN THE ROOM.  PARTICULARLY KIND, AS WE HAVE NOTED HOW, WHEN WE'VE ASKED PAIRS TO DO THIS, ONE MIGHT THINK SUCH PAIRS WOULD ALMOST ALWAYS WIN, OR LEAST HAVE VERY GOOD GAMES, AS THEIR EXPERIENCE OUTWEIGHS MOST OF THE REST OF THE COMPETITION IN THESE LIMITED GAMES.  YET, ODDLY ENOUGH, THIS IS RARELY THE CASE AND IN FACT SUCH PAIRS MORE OFTEN THAN NOT STRUGGLE TO EVEN ACHIEVE AVERAGE.  HENCE, SOME HESITATE TO ACCOMODATE US ALL IN THIS WAY, KNOWING ABOUT PAST RESULTS WHEN THEY HAVE AGREED TO DO SO.  BUT NOT TONIGHT.  OH, BYW, THIS IS WHY THE UPPER POINT LIMIT ON THIS GAME WAS CHANGED, FOR THE NIGHT, TO 750 POINTS, AS MARCIA IS FAST APPROACHING THAT THRESHOLD.  IN ANY CASE LILI and MARCIA ALSO HAD QUITE A NICE GAME, SCORING AN EVEN 50 (62.5%), RESULTING IN A MarginOfVictory OF 3/8 OF A BOARD.  THE NEXT CLOSEST PAIR WAS OUR VERY OWN (MARILYN) BOOKBINDER and KC (KATHLEEN) WHO SCORED 42.5 (53%) APPROXIMATELY 2 FULL BOARDS BEHIND THE TOP 2 PAIRS TO TAKE 2nd PLACE IN STRAT B.  ALSO SCRATCHING WERE MIKE and BERT WHOSE SCORE OF 37.5 (47%) EARNED THEM 1st PLACE IN STRAT C.

E/W THE WINNERS, ARTHUR and TOM G., WERE TRULY IN THE RARIFIED AIR, ALL BY THEIR LONESOME SELVES, SCORING 50.5 (63%).  THIS EASILY OUTDISTANCED ALL THE OTHERS.  WINNING A VERY CLOSE BATTLE FOR THE REMAINING 2nd PLACE HONORS WERE J-NICE (JANICE) and BOB W/ A SCORE OF 42 (52.5%).  THIS PROVIDED A WHOPPING MOV OF SLIGHTLY BETTER THAN 2 1/2 BOARDS.  2 OTHER PAIRS WERE AS CLOSE AS COULD BE, ONE MERE, MEASLE HALF POINT OUT OF 2nd PLACE, BUT OUT OF THE (SCRATCHING) MONEY.

IN THE OPEN GAME THE ONLY RACE THAT WAS EVEN SLIGHTLY CLOSELY CONTESTED WAS FOR 3rd PLACE.  WINNERS THE DOCS (ANDY and COURTENAY) PUT UP A HEALTHY SCORE OF 47 (AVERAGE WAS 36, TRANSLATING TO 65%, BEST IN THE ROOM).  2nd PLACE WENT TO JAMES SQUARED (SCOTT and HOPKIN) AND THEIR SCORE OF 43 ROUNDED TO 60%.  MOV WAS A ROUTINE 1 1/3 BOARDS.  BLAIR and JIM K. FINISHED 3rd W/ A SCORE OF 37 (51%).

NO FIRST-TIMERS TONIGHT BUT IT WOULD BE WILDLY REMISS TO FAIL TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE RETURN AND PRESENCE OF LONG-TIME 499er CHAMPIONS RON and ARNE WHO HAVE ALSO MORE THAN HELD THEIR OWN WHEN THEY'VE VENTURED UP INTO THE OPEN GAME.  THEY'VE NOT PLAYED W/ US IN A FAR LONGER TIME THAN WAS THEIR M.O. FOR MANY, MANY YEARS.  REALLY NICE TO SEE THEM AGAIN AND OF COURSE HOPING THEY WILL BE ABLE TO FIND THEIR WAY BACK TO US MORE OFTEN SOON.

ALSO, THANKS, AS ALWAYS, TO STALWART CONNIE FOR (AGAIN) COMING TO OUR RESCUE TO MAKE IT SO THAT ALL WHO WANTED TO PLAY HAD A PARTNER, ALSO HELPING MAKE FOR NO SIT-OUTS.  WE MUCH MISSED HER THE PREVIOUS 2 WEEKS, THE FIRST OF WHICH SHE WAS AWAY TRAVELLING, THE SECOND OF WHICH SHE HAD LOST POWER IN THE MONOPOLY'S BIG PSPS (PUBLIC SAFETY POWER SHUTDOWN), THUS MY FRANTIC LAST MINUTE PHONE CALL TO HER WAS UNABLE TO GET THROUGH (ALL I HEARD AFTER DIALING HER NUMBER WAS "CLICK-CLICK-CLICK"...).  HEARTILY SHE AND HENRY SURVIVED, SEEMINGLY NONE THE WORSE FOR WEAR, BUT EASY FOR ME TO SAY THAT...MY POWER CAME BACK ON SUCH THAT I ONLY ENDURED ABOUT 2 HOURS OF DARKNESS IN THE BEGINNING OF ONE SUNDAY EVENING; THEIRS WAS LONGER THAN THAT...

COUNTY COUNT TONIGHT SHOWS 13 PLAYERS, OUT OF THE ASSEMBLED 40 (A HEALTHY 32.5%) HAVING COME FROM OUTSIDE ALAMEDA COUNTY, ALL FROM CONTRA COSTA IN THIS CASE.  WE'RE GRATEFUL TO ALL OF THEM FOR COMING TO PLAY W/ US.

MEANING, AS ALWAYS OF COURSE, THANKS ALSO TO ALL OF YOU CAME TO PLAY TONIGHT AND CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO PLAYED WELL ENOUGH (AND/OR HAD ENOUGH OF LADY'S LUCK) TO SCRATCH...WELL DONE.  MUCH LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING Y'ALL WHO CAN MAKE IT TO PLAY W/ US NEXT TIME, WHICH IS, AS OF THIS RARE THURSDAY WRITING, STILL 4 DAYS AWAY.  TO ALL OF YOU THEN, TILL THEN...
