Wednesdays

No Wednesday games for now.  If you would be interested in a Swiss Team Game or a Limited Pairs Game (499er, 299er, 199er, etc.) or a Limited Swiss Team Game, or any other type of game on Wednesday evenings, please speak to me (Doug) about it.  Or also please feel free to email me (dough0918@aol.com) or phone me (925:938-4493) about it (or about anything else, really).  If I can sense there is enough interest in a Wednesday game to make it work, we could certainly have one.

RESULTS FROM THIS WEEK'S GAME (FEBRUARY 19) POSTED HERE (ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THIS PAGE) @ 11:20 pm

NOW FOR SOME NOTATIONS AND OBSERVATIONS OF THIS WEEK'S RESULTS (BLOG).

IN THE LIMITED GAME (599er THIS WEEK TO ACCOMODATE MARCIA, WHO, W/ LILI, WERE KIND ENOUGH TO SWITCH FROM OPEN GAME BACK TO LIMITED SO AS TO FIX THAT WE HAD HALF-A-TABLE IN EACH GAME), N-S WINNERS WERE MARILYN T. and JEFF WHO LITERALLY SMASHED, LAY WASTE TO (HOWEVER ONE MIGHT WANT TO PHRASE IT) THE REST OF THE FIELD W/ A RATHER RARIFIED 70% GAME, W/ A RAW SCORE OF 88.5, THUS PUTTING MORE THAN 2 1/2 FULL BOARDS BETWEEN THEMSELVES AND EVERYONE ELSE.  QUITE A PERFORMANCE FROM OUR LONG-TIME DENIZENS OF TABLE 3.  NEXT BEST OF "EVERYONE ELSE" WAS ACTUALLY ALSO QUITE A GOOD GAME, RAW SCORE OF 73 (58%) BY KC (KATHLEEN) and, COMPLETING THE CLEAN SWEEP BY OUR TWO MARILYNs (OUR FAVORITE) BOOKBINDER, GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN ON MANY OTHER NIGHTS, JUST NOT ON THIS ONE.  3rd PLACE THIS TIME WENT TO RON and ARNE WHO WERE THEIR USUAL CONSISTENT SELVES, TURNING IN A SCORE OF 71 (56%).  ALSO PLACING WERE ISABEL and DAVE BRADSHAW WHO CAME IN 2nd IN STRAT C, POSTING A SCORE OF 62 (49%).  PLUS, WE MUST THANK (FOR THE 2nd TIME IN 3 WEEKS) ISABEL WHO ALLOWED US TO TALK HER INTO SITTING N/S TO EVEN OUT THE STRATS IN THE FIELD AND DID, AGAIN, A REALLY NICE JOB OF SCORING, EVEN THOUGH SHE'S NOT PARTICULARLY USED TO DOING SO, BUT DID JUST FINE, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

E/W FIELD WAS MUCH MORE TIGHTLY BUNCHED.  IN FACT THE TOP 3 PAIRS WERE SEPARATED BY A MERE 3 MATCH-POINTS, EXACTLY HALF A BOARD.  COMING OUT ON TOP OF THIS ULTRA-COMPETITIVE SCRUM WERE JULIE BURNET and GAYLE HARLOW WHO AREN'T AROUND TO PLAY W/ US EACH AND EVERY WEEK OR EVEN MOST, AS SOME/MANY ARE, YET, WHEN THEY DO PLAY, THEY ARE ALMOST ALWAYS AT OR NEAR THE TOP OF THEIR (USUALLY E/W) FIELD.  ON THIS NIGHT THEY POSTED A SCORE OF 75 (60%) TO BEST TOM and ARTHUR WHO PUT TOGETHER A SCORE OF 72.5 (57.54%).  THIS EARNED THEM 2nd PLACE, BUT BY THE SLIMMEST OF MARGINS, HALF A MATCH-POINT, AHEAD OF HARD-CHARGING FINISHERS NANCY MORTON and DON LEVINE WHO WERE PAIRED BY THIS MATCH-MAKER AT A RELATIVELY LATE TIME DEEP INTO THE AFTERNOON (NOT THAT IT WAS ALL THAT HARD; THEY HAVE, IN FACT, PLAYED AT LEAST A COUPLE OF TIMES W/ US FAIRLY RECENTLY AND DONE QUITE WELL, AS IT TURNS OUT).  THEIR SCORE OF 72 (57.14%) EARNED THEM A SOLID 3rd PLACE.

MOVING ALONG NOW TO THE OPEN GAME, THIS WAS PRETTY MUCH A 2-HORSE RACE (WELL, 4, IF YOU COUNT EACH STEED IN THE RACE, AS OPPOSED TO THE NUMBER OF PARTNERSHIPS IN THE RACE), RIGHT FROM THE PRELIMINARY SCORES AFTER THE FIRST 20 BOARDS WERE COMPLETED THROUGH AND INCLUDING THE FINAL TALLY WHICH RESULTED FROM THE LAST (RELAY) ROUND, WHERE THE 5 BOARDS IN THAT LAST ROUND ARE ROTATED (RELAYED) AMONG ALL THE TABLES INVOLVED, MAKING FOR A BIT OF A GOOSE CHASE BY THE DIRECTOR, IN PART TO MAKE SURE THE ROTATION IS EQUAL AND PURE ENOUGH SO THAT NO TWO TABLES ARE WAITING AT THE END FOR THE SAME (LAST) BOARD TO PLAY.  WINNING IN THE END WERE GLENN and DAVEY C. WHO SCORED A 33.85 (68%); AVERAGE WAS 25.  THIS SLOTTED THEM A TAD MORE THAN ONE BOARD, OR 2 FULL MATCH-POINTS (THERE WERE DECIMALS INVOLVED BECAUSE ONE BOARD DID NOT GET PLAYED IN A TIMELY MANNER AT ONE TABLE) AHEAD OF 2nd PLACERS DAVID GEARY and BLAIR HOFFMAN., THE LATTER'S SCORE OF 31.75 (64%), AGAIN, WOULD HAVE BEEN GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN ON MANY NIGHTS, JUST NOT THIS ONE.  THIS, AGAIN, MADE FOR A CLEAN SWEEP OF (THIS TIME) BOTH DAVE/DAVID's IN THIS FIELD.  ALSO SCRATCHING WERE THE DOCS (ANDY and COURTENAY) WHOSE SCORE OF 25.75 (52%) GARNERED THEM 1st PLACE IN STRAT C.

NO FIRST-TIMERS WERE W/ US ON THIS NIGHT SO APPARENTLY THE PREZ. DAY HOLIDAY CAUSED SOME FOLKS TO STAY (HOME AND) LOCAL.  OUR 11 TABLES WAS ABOUT AN AVERAGE SIZE GAME, BUT A SOMEWHAT LOWER PERCENTAGE THAN USUAL WERE ALAMEDA COUNTIANS (IF I MAY HAVE COINED A WORD THERE), AS MY COUNT REVEALS THERE WERE ONLY 6 FOLKS FROM CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, 4 OF THEM IN THE OPEN GAME, PLUS ONE SAN FRANCISCAN, NO NOT DAISY, WHO, ALONG W/ PARTNER LISA SOMEHOW FOUND SOMETHING BETTER TO DO (OR POSSIBLY SOMETHING ONE OR BOTH OF THEM HAD TO DO) AND SO TOOK THE NIGHT OFF FROM US, BUT RATHER STEVE SUACCI.  AND OF COURSE IT WAS INDEED NICE AND AN ALL-TOO-RARE TREAT TO SEE HIM AND PARTNER ROD GOREE IN ACTION W/ US.  ALL-TOO-RARE FOR ROD BECAUSE HE WORKS IN SAN FRANCISCO, INVOLVING, IN ADDITION TO THE WORK ITSELF, A TRANS-BAY COMMUTE EACH AND EVERY DAY AND FOR STEVE, WELL, HE INDEED LIVES IN S.F., SO WE'RE ALWAYS HAPPY WHEN THEY CAN, EITHER INDIVIDUALLY OR ELSE TOGETHER, MAKE THEIR RESPECTIVE WAYS TOWARDS US.

AS ALWAYS, MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO SHOWED UP, AND PARTICULAR CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO PLAYED WELL ENOUGH TO SCRATCH (PLACE AND EARN MASTER-POINTS).  OF COURSE WE HOPE TO SEE Y'ALL THIS UPCOMING MONDAY...SINCE I AM TYPING THIS A BIT EARLIER THAN USUAL, ON THURSDAY EVENING, THAT NEXT MONDAY NIGHT ON WHICH WE DO HOPE TO SEE YOU WOULD BE A BREATHLESSLY SHORT 4 NIGHTS FROM NOW...

RESULTS NOW POSTED HERE (IN THE COLUMN TO THE FAR LEFT, OF COURSE, AS USUAL) FOR THIS WEEK'S (FEBRUARY 12GAME. IT IS CURRENTLY 12:30 am (TUESDAY MORNING).  SORRY 'BOUT THAT...HADDA PLAY THIS WEEK SO NO HEAD-START ON SCORING.

TIME NOW (WE'VE FAST FORWARDED AHEAD, FOR THE 2nd TIME IN THE PAST 3 WEEKS, TO LATE SATURDAY AFTERNOON) FOR THE WEEKLY OBSERVATIONS OF THIS GAME (THE BLOG).

IN THE 499er GAME, N/S, WINNING AGAIN, AS THEY SO OFTEN DO, WERE ARNE and RON WHO REALLY CRUSHED IT THIS WEEK, SCORING AN 86 (68%) TO WIN GOING AWAY BY MORE THAN 2 FULL BOARDS.  A NICE SCORE OF 73 (58%) GARNERED 2nd PLACE FOR DAISY and LISA.  NEXT, IN 3rd WERE PAT and LEO WHOSE SCORE ROUNDED TO 70 (58%).

E/W, ANOTHER FINE, CONSISTENT GAME FROM ELAINE and ARNITA BROUGHT THEM A RELATIVELY EASY WIN.  THEY SCORED 75 (59%) TO WIN BY MORE THAN A FULL BOARD.  2nd PLACE WENT TO HELENE and JOHN V. WHO PUT UP A 67 (53%).  ARTHUR and TOM SQUEEZED INTO 3rd, W/ A SCORE OF 63.92 (50.73%), JUST NOSING OUT BARBARA and LINDA WHO SCORED 63.25 (50.20%), JUST MISSING OUT ON SCRATCHING BY A MERE 0.67 OF A MATCH POINT.  THIS E/W FIELD WAS PACKED TOGETHER FAIRLY TIGHTLY; OTHER THAN WINNERS ELAINE and ARNITA WHO FINISHED ALMOST 12 FULL MATCH-POINTS ABOVE AVERAGE, NONE OF THE OTHER 6 PAIRS FINISHED MORE THAN 8 POINTS EITHER ABOVE OR BELOW AVERAGE...A BIT OF A STATISTICAL ODDITY THERE.

HAPPY TO WELCOME BACK AND SEE JAMES BOND AGAIN; HE DOESN'T MAKE IT IN TO SEE US NEARLY AS OFTEN AS WE'D LIKE.  AND, IN ADDITION, HE WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO BRING US A FIRST-TIMER (FOR US) YOLANDA HEIJNEN.  I THINK I GOT THE SPELLING RIGHT, BUT PROBABLY STILL NEED WORK ON MY PRONUNCIATION.  YOLANDA IS DUTCH (YAY, CULTURAL DIVERSITY FOR OUR PIEDMONT GAME).  DIDN'T GET TO TALK TO HER ENOUGH TO FIND OUT IF SHE IS HERE TO STUDY, TO WORK, OR JUST ON SHORT (OR LONG) VACA, BUT DID GET TO ASK HER HOW MUCH OF A BRIDGE BACKGROUND SHE HAS, FOR PURPOSES OF PROPERLY STRATIFYING THEM IN OUR LIMITED GAME.  SHE SAID SHE HAD AROUND 500 POINTS, BUT OF COURSE THOSE ARE DUTCH POINTS AND I'VE LEARNED THAT MASTER-POINTS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES OR EVEN OTHER ASSOCIATIONS (SUCH AS ABA, THE MOSTLY AFRICAN-AMERICAN BRIDGE ASSOCIATION W/IN THIS COUNTRY) DON'T NECESSARILY TRANSLATE EXACTLY INTO ACBL MASTER-POINTS AND, IN FACT, SOMETIMES VARY CONSIDERABLY.  I SLOTTED THEM IN STRAT A, BUT REALIZED YESTERDAY THAT I COULD CALL ACBL HEADQUARTERS AND FIND OUT SOME SORT OF FORMULA FOR TRANSLATION OF SUCH POINTS; TOO LATE TO DO SO YESTERDAY, BUT WILL DO LATER THIS COMING WEEK.  YOLANDA SAID SHE'S BEEN PLAYING ABOUT 3 YEARS AND HAD BEEN TO SEVERAL TOURNAMENTS IN HOLLAND; I JUST GOT THE FEELING SHE KNOWS WHAT SHE'S DOING.  DO HOPE SHE AND JAMES COME BACK TO SEE US AND WE'LL FIND OUT FROM A LARGER SAMPLE SIZE OF RESULTS HOW SHE AND THEY STACK UP AGAINST OUR 499ers.

IN THE OPEN GAME JAMES and JIM EEKED OUT A HANDY 1 POINT WIN, SCORING 61 (AVERAGE WAS 48) FOR 64%, ROUNDED, MEANING THEY HAD QUITE A GOOD GAME.  JUST BEHIND THEM WERE SIDNEY and HIS LAME (AT LEAST ACCORDING TO HIM) PARTNER AND THAT WOULD BE, er, MOI.  THOSE OF YOU WHO NOTICED MUCH (SEMI-) SHOUTING AND CERTAINLY GOINGS-ON COMING FROM THAT DIRECTION, WELL THERE WERE 2 BOARDS OVER WHICH WE HAD VERY STRONG DISPUTES OVER THE AUCTION.  BOTH OF US BEING THE STUBBORN MULES WE ARE, BOTH OF US THINKING WE KNOW WAY MORE THAN THE OTHER, I MUST TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO APOLOGIZE TO ANY OR ALL WHO WERE IN ANY WAY DISRUPTED, DISTRACTED, OR OTHERWISE BOTHERED BY OUR SHOUTING.  NO EXCUSE WHATSOEVER (BUT OF COURSE I AM SURE THAT SIDNEY IS QUITE LIMITED IN HIS VIEW AND THAT HE COULD HAVE SAVED US THE ARGUMENTS AND ENOUGH MATCH-POINTS TO HAVE COME IN 1st, HAD HE JUST BID AS I WOULD HAVE BID AND AS I THINK ONLY MAKES REASONABLE SENSE).  OUR SCORE WAS 60 (63%, ROUNDED).  OF COURSE I WAS MOST SURPRISED BY THIS TURN OF EVENTS AS I CONSIDER SIDNEY PRETTY MUCH FAR AND AWAY THE BEST PLAYER WHO COMES TO OUR GAMES, WHICH HAS BEEN THE CASE FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW.  I BELIEVE MY OWN EXPOSURE TO THE TOP-LEVELS OF THE GAME HAS, FOR VARIOUS SERENDIPITOUS REASONS, BEEN MORE EXTENSIVE THAN HIS, BUT I STILL WAS SURPRISED THAT HE TOOK THE POSITION(S) HE TOOK ON THESE TWO BOARDS.  AND SO IT GOES, AS IT FREQUENTLY DOES IN MOST ANY AND EVERY COMPETITIVE VENTURE AND OUR GAME IS NOTHING IF IT IS NOT THAT.

BUT I DIGRESS...SO, BACK TO THE RESULTS...COMING IN 3rd ON THIS NIGHT WERE THE DOCS (COURTENAY and ANDY) W/ A SCORE OF 54 (56%).  4th WERE BLAIR and DAVID G. SCORED 48.5 (51%, ROUNDED).  NEITHER OF THEIR REGULAR PARTNERS (JIM K. and ART) WERE ABLE TO MAKE IT ON THIS NIGHT SO THEY MANAGED TO PAIR UP AND SCRATCH.  ALSO IN THE MONEY, JUST ONE-HALF OF A MATCH-POINT FURTHER BACK WERE GISH and (THE REALDOUG (C.), WHOSE SCORE OF 48 (DEAD AVERAGE/50%) GOT THEM 4th PLACE IN STRAT B.  ALSO, LILI (HAVING CANCELLED THE TRIP SHE'D PLANNED AND THOUGHT SHE WAS TAKING AND THUS AVAILABLE TO PLAY, AFTER ALL) and MARCIA WERE ABLE TO SCRATCH AS WELL, SCORING 46 (48%), GOOD ENOUGH FOR 2nd IN STRAT C.

ALSO, ANOTHER PAIR WE HADN'T SEEN IN QUITE A WHILE (HARDLY 1st TIMERS, BUT LONG-TIME ABSENTEES TO BE SURE) (L.) NEIL SWANSON and JIM WEIDER WERE HAPPILY W/ US ONCE AGAIN.  NEIL HAD BEEN WORKING, WRAPPING UP HIS CAREER SO HE COULD RETIRE, WHICH HE NOW HAS.  THE BAD NEWS FOR US AT LEAST IS THAT HAVING DONE THAT, HE WILL BE MOVING UP TO MONTANA I BELIEVE HE SAID IN A COUPLE OF MONTHS; EVEN NOW HE HAS MOVED FROM WALNUT CREEK OUT TO LIVERMORE, SO NOT SURE AT ALL HOW MUCH MORE WE WILL SEE HIM TILL HE LEAVES THE BAY AREA.  HIS LAST APPEARANCE W/ US WAS NEARLY 2 YEARS AGO, IN APRIL, 2016.  AS FOR JIM'S PART, HE DOESN'T SEEM TO WANT TO PLAY UNLESS HE'S PLAYING W/ NEIL.  I'VE CERTAINLY TRIED IN THE PAST TO TWIST HIS ARM INTO LETTING ME FIX HIM UP W/ A PARTNER OR PARTNERS (LIKE NEIL, HE'S A FINE PLAYER AND A REALLY NICE, MELLOW YOUNG MAN, WOULD MAKE ANYONE A FINE PARTNER) BUT HE'S ALWAYS POLITELY TURNED ME DOWN, SO I DIDN'T EVEN BOTHER TO BUG HIM ABOUT IT THIS TIME.  I DID ASK HIM HOW LONG IT HAD BEEN SINCE HE'D LAST PLAYED AND WHILE HE WAS TRYING TO REMEMBER, I FOLLOWED BY ASKING IF IT WAS POSSIBLY THE LAST TIME HE'D PLAYED HERE, W/ US.  AFTER SOME THOUGHT, HE DECIDED IT PROBABLY WAS.  I LOOKED THAT UP (AND LUCKILY MY DATA BASE NOW HAS ENOUGH DEPTH THAT IT WAS RECORDED) AND IT TURNED OUT TO BE EVEN LONGER AGO, MORE THAN 6 MONTHS LONGER AGO, THAN FOR NEIL, TO WIT SEPTEMBER, 2015.  DO HOPE THEY CAN MAKE IT BACK AT LEAST A FEW TIMES BEFORE NEIL RELOCATES TO THE GREAT NORTHWEST.  ACTUALLY, I JUST LOOKED AGAIN AT THE DATA BASE AND JIM IS LISTED AS LIVING IN PORTLAND, OREGON.  I THOUGHT HE LIVED IN OAKLAND.  PERHAPS HE HAS MOVED TO THE NORTHWEST ALREADY, OR, POSSIBLY, THAT IS AN OLD ADDRESS WHERE HE USED TO LIVE BUT HE'S NEVER CHANGED IT ON ACBL DATABASE TO OAKLAND (IF HE INDEED DOES LIVE IN OAKLAND AT ALL).

AS ALWAYS I'D LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO THANK ALL OF YOU WHO SHOWED UP TO MAKE THIS GAME AS GOOD AS IT WAS AND CONGRATULATE ALL WHO PLAYED WELL ENOUGH TO HAVE PLACED.  DO HOPE TO SEE Y'ALL MONDAY (TWO NIGHTS FROM WHEN I AM TYPING THIS) AND SIDNEY WILL BE ONLY ALL TOO HAPPY TO HAVE REGULAR PARTNER HANK BACK THE FOLLOWING WEEK (NEITHER OF THEM CAN PLAY THIS WEEK).  MEANING THE NEXT GAMES WILL BE MUCH MORE ORDERLY W/OUT THE (RELATIVELY MILD, OR AT LEAST I HOPE SO) DISRUPTIONS OF THIS PAST WEEK.  SO THANKS AGAIN TO ALL, CERTAINLY FOR YOUR PATIENCE, IN ADDITION TO EVERYTHING ELSE.
