 Wednesdays

No Wednesday games for now.  If you would be interested in a Swiss Team Game or a Limited Pairs Game (499er, 299er, 199er, etc.) or a Limited Swiss Team Game, or any other type of game on Wednesday evenings, please speak to me (Doug) about it.  Or also please feel free to email me (dough0918@aol.com) or phone me (925:938-4493) about it (or about anything else, really).  If I can sense there is enough interest in a Wednesday game to make it work, we could certainly have one.

SCORES FROM TONIGHT'S (JULY 8) GAME ARE POSTED IN THE FAR LEFT COLUMN, AS USUAL, AND THEY WERE POSTED AT 11:15 pm.  ...AS FOR NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS (BLOG), I AM SO FAR BEHIND IN THESE AND ONLY NOW HAVE TIME TO START TO TRY TO CATCH UP.  THE BLOG POSTED BELOW WAS (NOW) MORE THAN A MONTH OLD.  SO LET ME START (TO CATCH UP) BY POSTING NOW THE THOUGHTS, NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS FROM THE FIRST GAME (CHRONOLOGICALLY) THAT HAS NOT YET RECEIVED ITS DUE ATTENTION AND THAT WOULD BE THE GAME HELD NEARLY 2 1/2 WEEKS AGO NOW (CURRENTLY WRITING THIS THURSDAY EVENING, JULY 11) THE GAME OF JUNE 24, OUR KNOCK-DOWN/DRAG-OUT CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP, CELEBRATING THE END OF THE 2nd CALENDAR QUARTER OF YEAR 2019 .

MEANTIME, ANOTHER IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT...NEXT MONDAY (JULY 15), WE WILL BE OPEN HERE AS USUAL, HOWEVER THE FOLLOWING WEEK (JULY 22) THERE WILL BE NO BRIDGE HERE THAT MONDAY NIGHT...I WILL BE ON ANOTHER WORK ASSIGNMENT OUT OF TOWN.  HOWEVER OUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED MONDAY NIGHT GAMES WILL RESUME THE FOLLOWING WEEK (JULY 29)...SO, OPEN NEXT WEEK, CLOSED THE FOLLOWING WEEK, THEN REOPENING W/ REGULAR MONDAY NIGHT SCHEDULE THE WEEK AFTER THAT, OK?  THANKS FOR PUTTING UP W/ THE INCONVENIENCE (HAVING TO REMEMBER, WHICH DATES HE'S OPEN, WHICH ONE HE'S CLOSED).

IN THE 499er, NO-ONE RAN AWAY W/ THE EVENT AND BOTH DIRECTIONS FEATURED TIGHT RACES WHICH CAME RIGHT DOWN TO THE END.  NOT MUCH VARIANCE BETWEEN THE HIGHEST SCORES AND THE LOWEST ONES ON THIS NIGHT.  3 N/S PAIRS SEPARATED THEMSELVES FROM THE OTHER 3, BUT NOT BY ALL THAT MUCH.  WINNERS PROVED TO BE KAREN and JERRY WHO CLAIMED 1st PLACE OVERALL IN THIS GAME (MEANING THEIRS WAS THE BEST SCORE IN THE ENTIRE GAME, BOTH DIRECTIONS).  THEY SCORED 46.5 (AVERAGE WAS 40, MAKING THIS A 58% GAME), GARNERING THEM 1.87 MASTER POINTS, GRAVY WELL EARNED ON THIS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP NIGHT.  THERE WAS A TIE FOR 2nd/3rd PLACE BETWEEN MARILYN T. and JEFF ALONG W/ J-NICE (JANIS) and BOB, BOTH PAIRS SCORING 43.5 (54%).  THE MarginOfVictory WAS 3/4 OF A BOARD.  ALL THESE SCORES WERE BETTER (BARELY) THAN ANY ACHIEVED IN THE E/W DIRECTION, MAKING THESE LATTER 2 PAIRS NOT ONLY 2nd/3rd PLACE IN THEIR DIRECTION, BUT ACTUALLY 2nd/3rd PLACE OVERALL, THUS WORTH THE WHOPPING AWARDS OF 1.23 MASTER POINTS.  WELL DONE, ALL!!!

E/W FEATURED AN EVEN TIGHTER RACE W/ THE TOP 5 PAIRS ALL W/IN 3 MATCH POINTS (AGAIN, A MERE 3/4 OF A BOARD) OF EACH OTHER, MEANING NOT JUST, AS W/ N/S, 2 PAIRS WERE THAT CLOSE TO THE TOP PAIR, BUT ALL 5 OF THESE PAIRS WERE BUNCHED THAT CLOSELY.  MARGINS OF SEPARATION AMONG THESE 5 PAIRS WERE EXACTLY 1 MATCH POINT FROM EACH ONE TO THE ONE DIRECTLY BEHIND THEM UNTIL THE LAST TWO, WHO WERE EXACTLY TIED.  THE HAPPY (AND RELIEVED) WINNERS OF THIS MAD DASH TO THE FINISH LINE WERE BC (BONNIE) and BILL PUTTING UP A FINAL TALLY OF 43 (54%).  SO IN ADDITION TO THEIR 1st PLACE (SECTION, i.e. E/W ONLY) AWARD, THEY ALSO WERE ENTITLED TO A 4th PLACE OVERALL AWARD, WHICH WAS APPARENTLY BIGGER THAN THE SECTION AWARD WOULD HAVE BEEN, THUS THEY EARNED .79 MASTER POINTS FOR THEIR NIGHT'S EFFORTS.  THEIR MOV WAS A MERE 1/4 OF A BOARD OVER 2nd PLACERS ARNITA and ELAINE WHOSE 42 (53%) RECEIVED AN AWARD OF .55 MASTER POINTS, AGAIN NOT FOR COMING IN 2nd PLACE IN THEIR SECTION, BUT BY FINISHING 4th OVERALL, THIS TIME IN THE B STRAT.  THE NEXT 3 PAIRS HAD SCORES OF 41, 40, AND 40 RESPECTIVELY, SADLY, ALL JUST OUT OF THE MONEY.  WHEW, PRETTY DARNED CLOSE.  WELL DONE TO ALL OF THESE FOLKS WHO FINISHED AT 50% OR BETTER.  NOW TYPING THIS SATURDAY NIGHT (8:45 pm) AND MUST TAKE A SHORT BREAK (TO GO PICK UP DAUGHTER KELLY FROM WORK), BUT WILL POST THIS UNFINISHED SCREED NOW AND COME BACK TO FINISH IT BEFORE REWARDING MYSELF W/ DINNER LATER ON...

OK, BACK NOW AND ON TO THE OPEN GAME, WHERE SCORES WERE RADICALLY DIFFERENT FROM THOSE IN THE 499er SECTION...MUCH MORE DIVERSE AND WELL SPREAD-OUT.  WINNERS W/ A BIG SCORE TONIGHT, BEST IN THE WHOLE ROOM BY LOTS, WERE GLENN and DAVID G. WHO POSTED 67.88 (AVERAGE WAS 48, SO THIS COMPUTES TO 71%).  THIS 1st OVERALL GAME WAS WORTH 3.06 MASTER POINTS.  WHOA, WAY TOO GOOD, AS RESULTS SHOW.  NO ONE WAS CATCHING THIS PAIR ON THIS NIGHT.  THIS SCORE WAS SO GOOD, DEB and WAYNETHE 2nd PLACE (OVERALL) PAIR, WAS LESS THAN A POINT SHY OF BEING 2 FULL BOARDS IN AREARS OF IT, YET STILL POSTED A FINE SCORE OF 60.52 THEMSELVES (AN AMAZINGLY GOOD 63%, CONSIDERING HOW FAR THEY WERE BEHIND THE WINNERS).  FURTHER AMAZING IN THAT THEY, AS A STRAT C PAIR, HAVE FEWER THAN 1/2 THE MASTER POINTS OF THE PAIR TO WHOM THEY WERE CLOSEST IN THAT REGARD, AND FEWER THAN 1/3 OF THE HOLDINGS OF MOST ALL OF THE OTHER 4 PAIRS IN THE GAME.  QUITE AN ACCOMPLISHMENT.  OK, WE CAN THROW IN ONE FINAL KICKER...AT GAME TIME, DEB and WAYNE WERE SITTING, PRESUMABLY PEACEFULLY AND QUIETLY, AT HOME IN ORINDA, WHEN THEIR PHONE RANG (ME, CALLING TO SEE IF THEY COULD/WOULD COME DOWN AND FILL IN FOR US, SO AS TO AVOID A SIT-OUT).  AS THEY TYPICALLY DO WHEN HOME WHEN ASKED, THEY DID SO AND BARELY MORE THAN 3 HIGHLY EFFICIENT HOURS LATER, THEY HARVESTED 2.30 POINTS FOR THEIR 2nd OVERALL FINISH IN THIS OPEN GAME, WHICH A MERE YEAR OR SO EARLIER WOULD HAVE BEEN A DAUNTING TASK FOR THESE (AT THAT TIME) RELATIVELY NEWISH PLAYERS.  CONGRATS AND THANKS, IN EQUAL DOLLOPS.  PLACING 3rd OVERALL ON THIS NIGHT AND YET NEARLY ANOTHER FULL BOARD BEHIND THE 2nd PLACE PAIR WERE GISH and THE REAL (DOUG) W/ THE STILL-FINE SCORE OF 56.38 (59%), WORTH 1.72 POINTS, CERTAINLY GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN ON MANY NIGHTS, YET NOT EVEN CLOSE ON THIS ONE.  4th OVERALL WERE LO-IE (LOIS) and JIM S., SCORING 50.25 (52%), EARNING 1.29 POINTS.  ALSO PLACING WERE LAURA and LISA WHO EARNED 2nd PLACE OVERALL IN STRAT C (HOLDING FEWER COMBINED MASTER POINTS THAN ALL BUT 2 OTHER PAIRS IN THE GAME), W/ THE SCORE OF 47.75, JUST UNDER AVERAGE, ROUNDING TO 50%, WORTH 1.14 POINTS.

NO FIRST-TIMERS ON THIS NIGHT.  COUNTY COUNT REVEALS 14 OUT OF 44 PLAYERS HERE FROM OUTSIDE ALAMEDA COUNTY (ALL BUT ONE, HARRY, WHO HAILS FROM MARIN, FROM CONTRA COSTA COUNTY), A WHOPPING 32%.  NOT SURE IF WE'VE EVER HAD THAT MANY COME SEE US FROM OUT OF COUNTY.  MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO DID SO.

AND FINALLY, MANY THANKS (AGAIN AND ALSO) TO ALL WHO CAME TO PLAY ON THIS NIGHT AND CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO PLAYED WELL ENOUGH TO SCRATCH, NEVER EASY AGAINST OUR TOP-NOTCH FIELDS IN BOTH GAMES.  DO HOPE TO SEE ANY AND ALL OF YOU OUT THERE WHO CAN MAKE IT IN TO PLAY AT OUR NEXT GAME, A MERE DAY AND A HALF AWAY FROM NOW, JULY 15.  OF COURSE THIS IS 3 WEEKS AFTER THE GAME WHICH WE HAVE JUST REVIEWED ABOVE, MEANING I MAY HAVE CAUGHT UP A BIT W/ THIS WRITING, BUT I STILL OWE Y'ALL TWO MORE FULL BLOGS IN ORDER TO GET FULLY CAUGHT UP.  ONE COMING LATER TODAY (NOW WEE HOURS OF SUNDAY MORNING).  THEN WILL FULLY CATCH UP LATER IN THE WEEK (W/ ANY LUCK).  SO, TILL THEN...

Fridays

If you need to phone Doug at Vet's Bldg. (playing site), you can use 510:652-2587 (no voicemail, so it works only after about 7:10 pm--on game nights).

NO FRIDAY GAMES FOR NOW...

SCORES FROM TONIGHT'S (JULY 15) GAME ARE POSTED IN THE FAR LEFT COLUMN, AS USUAL, AND THEY WERE POSTED AT 11:40 pm.  NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS WILL BE POSTED AT THE END OF THE WEEK.  AS YOU PROBABLY ARE ALL WELL AWARE, I FELL BEHIND A BIT IN BLOGS...ONLY OVER THIS PAST WEEK END FINISHED THE ONE FOR JUNE 24 (CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP EVENING), IN THE COLUMN DIRECTLY TO THE LEFT OF THIS ONE, ALSO THE ONE FOR JULY 1, DIRECTLY BELOW, IN THIS VERY COLUMN.  WILL LEAVE BOTH UP FOR A WEEK OR SO, IN CASE ANYONE WHO WAS LOOKING FOR THEM ON TIME MIGHT GET TO SEE THEM NOW; THEN AT THE END OF THIS WEEK OR EARLY NEXT, I'LL WRITE ONE FOR LAST WEEK'S GAME (JULY 8FOR WHICH I'M STILL BEHIND AND ALSO ONE FOR TONIGHT'S GAME...AND W/ NO GAME TO WRITE ABOUT NEXT WEEK, THOSE 2 CAN BE UP LONG ENOUGH FOR Y'ALL TO HAVE A CHANCE TO LOOK AT THEM.  THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE...WILL MISS YOU NEXT MONDAY (NO GAME), BUT LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING FOLKS BACK HERE 2 WEEKS FROM TONIGHT, JULY 29, OK?

SPEAKING OF WHICH, WANTING/NEEDING TO REMIND ALL FOLKS, ONE MORE TIME, OF THE INFO IN THIS SAME BROWN COLOR IN THE COLUMN DIRECTLY TO THE LEFT OF THIS ONE, WHICH IS THAT WE WILL BE CLOSED NEXT MONDAY; NO GAME ON JULY 22, AS I WILL BE OUT OF TOWN ON A MUCH NEEDED ASSIGNMENT TO WHICH I AM ONLY NOW APPARENTLY BEGINNING TO RECOVER SUCH WANTED WORK.  I WILL MISS YOU ALL, TO BE SURE, BUT WILL RETURN, AS USUAL, THE MONDAY AFTER THAT, JULY 29AND WILL LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ALL AGAIN THEN, OK?

SO, BACK TO THE GAME OF JULY 1, IN THE 499er, J-NICE (JANIS) and BOB ROSE UP FOR THEIR 2nd WIN IN 3 WEEKS, SCORING 46 (AVERAGE WAS 40, SO THIS TRANSLATES TO 57.5%).  THIS WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR EXACTLY A ONE FULL BOARD MarginOfVictory OVER 2nd PLACE FINISHERS HELENE and JOHN WHO SCORED 42 (52.5%).  2 OTHER PAIRS WERE VERY CLOSE, BUT COULDN'T QUITE CATCH HELENE and JOHN, ALSO LEAVING THIS FIELD LOOKING REMARKABLY SIMILAR TO LAST WEEK'S E/W FIELD IN THAT ALL PAIRS SAVE ONE WERE AT OR ABOVE THE 50% MARK...NONE WERE VERY MUCH OVER 50%, BUT ESPECIALLY THE 2nd, 3rd, AND 4th PAIRS WERE ALL CLUSTERED IN A VERY TIGHT RACE.

THIS WEEK'S E/W FIELD, HOWEVER, WAS AS RADICALLY DIFFERENT IN SOME WAYS AS LAST WEEK'S OPEN GAME FIELD, MEANING, ONE CLEAR WINNER BY A LARGE MARGIN, THE OTHER PAIRS ALSO MUCH MORE SPREAD OUT, W/ NO ONE REALLY CHALLENGING THE 2nd PLACE PAIR EITHER.  MAXINE and ERIC MADE SURE NO ONE WOULD CATCH THEM AS THEY WON W/ A SCORE OF 52.5 (66%), BEST IN THE ENTIRE ROOM ON THIS NIGHT.  WELL DONE!!!  LIKEWISE, MAROLYN and RICHARD WEREN'T ABOUT TO SUFFER MUCH COMPETITION EITHER AS THEY SCORED 43.5 (54%) AND NONE OF THE OTHER PAIRS WERE EVEN PARTICULARLY CLOSE TO 50% ON THIS EVENING.  MOV FOR MAX and ERIC WAS A FULL 2 1/4 BOARDS.

NOW ON TO THE OPEN GAME WHERE, SIMILAR TO THE E/W FIELD ABOVE, THIS FIELD WAS SPREAD OUT AND THE WINNERS, JIM K. and BLAIR, MADE SURE TO PUT PLENTY OF SEPARATION BETWEEN THEMSELVES AND ALL THE REST, SCORING 76 (AVERAGE WAS 60, SO THIS TRANSLATED TO 63%), A FINE GAME.  2nd PLACE WENT TO A DOC (COURTENAY) and HIS PARD WHO SCORED 72 (AN EVEN 60%), DECENT ENOUGH YET 4/5 OF A BOARD BEHIND THE WINNERS.  3rd PLACE WENT TO DAVID G. and GLENN WHO SCORED 66.5 (55%).  ALL PRETTY WIDE MARGINS BETWEEN ALL THESE PAIRS, THAT IS UNTIL WE GOT TO THE TIE FOR 4th/5th PLACES BETWEEN ISAAC and HARRY (WHAT GREAT ROLE MODELS THIS SON/FATHER PAIR IS...WOULD THAT OTHER FAMILIES COULD SPAN THE GENERATION GAP AS THEY HAVE TO HELP KEEP BRIDGE ROLLING FOR THE FUTURE GENERATIONS) ALSO DONNA and DAVEY C.  ALWAYS HAPPY TO CATCH A RARE GLIMPSE OF DONNA ROLLE AND HAPPY TO SEE HER, WHENEVER SHE CAN MAKE IT TO PLAY W/ US.  IN THAT SAME CATEGORY ARE ESTHER RUBKE and MARY LEVINE, NOT EXACTLY THE QUINTESSENTIAL NIGHT OWLS AS SOME OF THE REST OF US ARE, SO WE ARE EQUALLY HAPPY TO SEE THEM ON THE OCCASIONS WHEN THEY CAN MAKE IT TO BE W/ US.

ALSO SCRATCHING HERE, AND, AS ALWAYS, A SPECIAL PROPS TO LILI and MARCIA FOR BATTLING ALL THESE MORE EXPERIENCED, HIGHER MASTER POINT-RANKED OTHER PAIRS TO COME OUT W/ 2nd PLACE IN STRAT C W/ A SCORE OF 60 (A NICE, ROUND, EVEN 50%).  IN FACT, THIS PAIR HAD FEWER COMBINED MASTER POINTS THAN ALL BUT ONE OTHER PAIR IN THIS GAME...AND THAT OTHER PAIR WOULD BE OUR SON/FATHER/ISAAC and HARRY PAIR...AND HOW SHORT-SIGHTED WAS I IN OVERLOOKING THAT FACTOID WHEN I MENTIONED THEIR 4th/5th PLACE FINISH ABOVE??  THEY ALSO DESERVE EQUAL PROPS (IF NOT MORE SO?) THAN LILI and MARCIA FOR BATTLING HIGHER-POINT RANKED PAIRS THAN THEMSELVES...I GUESS SOMEHOW I FEEL THAT HARRY (POSSIBLY EVEN ISAAC AS WELL?) MAY HAVE MORE (RUBBER BRIDGE/FAMILY BRIDGE?  JUST GRASPING AT STRAWS HERE) EXPERIENCE THAN IS REFLECTED IN THEIR MASTER POINT TOTALS...OR POSSIBLY HARRY DID PLAY A FAIR AMOUNT OF DUPLICATE LONG AGO, BUT THEN GAVE IT UP, AS SO MANY DO, FOR CAREER AND FAMILY AND W/ THE MAFIA'S VARYING POLICIES, LOST WHATEVER MASTER POINTS HE HAD EARNED TO THAT POINT.  OR MAYBE NONE OF THE ABOVE?...I DO NEED TO INQUIRE OF THEM, AS NOW I AM CURIOUS ABOUT THIS.

NO FIRST-TIMERS TONIGHT SO WE'LL GO NEXT TO THE COUNTY COUNT AND, EXACTLY THE SAME AS LAST WEEK, THUS POSSIBLY TYING OUR ALL-TIME HIGH FOR PERCENTAGE (ALSO RAW NUMBER) NON-ALAMEDA COUNTY PLAYERS, I COUNT 14 (EXCEPT FOR MARINITE HARRY, ALL THE OTHERS FROM CONTRA COSTA COUNTY) OUT OF 44 OR 32% CAME TO US FROM OUTSIDE THE LOCAL COUNTY.  MANY THANKS TO ALL OF THEM FOR DOING SO.                          AND, AS ALWAYS THANKS ALSO TO ALL OF YOU CAME TO PLAY ON THIS NIGHT AND CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO PLAYED WELL ENOUGH (AND/OR HAD ENOUGH OF LADY'S LUCK) TO SCRATCH...WELL DONE.  MUCH LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING Y'ALL WHO CAN MAKE IT TO PLAY W/ US TOMORROW NIGHT, SLIGHTLY MORE THAN 24 HOURS FROM NOW, BEFORE OUR BRIEF ONE-WEEK HIATUS.  TILL THEN...
