 Wednesdays

No Wednesday games for now.  If you would be interested in a Swiss Team Game or a Limited Pairs Game (499er, 299er, 199er, etc.) or a Limited Swiss Team Game, or any other type of game on Wednesday evenings, please speak to me (Doug) about it.  Or also please feel free to email me (dough0918@aol.com) or phone me (925:938-4493) about it (or about anything else, really).  If I can sense there is enough interest in a Wednesday game to make it work, we could certainly have one.

RESULTS FROM TONIGHT'S (SEPTEMBER 16) GAME ARE POSTED IN THE FAR LEFT COLUMN, AS USUAL, AND THEY WERE POSTED AT 11:15 pm...AND NEWS AND NOTES (THE BLOG) WILL FOLLOW BELOW LATER IN THE WEEK.  FOR NOW WE'LL LEAVE THE PREVIOUS BLOG BELOW FOR LACK OF ANYTHING BETTER TO DO W/ THE SPACE.  THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE IN THIS...

IN THE 499er SECTION ABSOLUTELY HUGE GAME (AND WIN) FOR GAYE and PEGGY W/ BEST SCORE IN THE ROOM, AN 86 (AVERAGE WAS 63, THUS THIS IS 68%, WOW!).  WELL DONE FOLKS.  AFTER THEM THERE WAS A TIE FOR 2nd/3rd BETWEEN TOM and ARTHUR W/ MARILYN T. and JEFF, EACH OF WHOM SCORED 75 (59%).  THUS THE MarginOfVictory FOR THE WINNERS WAS NEARLY 2 FULL BOARDS...IMPRESSIVE.  NO ONE ELSE IN THIS  DIRECTION WAS EVEN VERY CLOSE TO 50%.  HOWEVER ONE MORE PAIR DID SCRATCH...NEWLY REUNITED AFTER AMA HAD RETURNED TO US FROM A SUMMER ELSEWHERE, SHE WAS PLAYING W/ HELEN B., THEY SCORED 57 (45%) TO GRAB 2nd PLACE IN STRAT B (ALSO 1st PLACE IN STRAT C, BUT THE FORMER EARNED A BIGGER MASTER POINT AWARD, SO THAT'S THE ONE THEY RECEIVED).

E/W, J-NICE (JANIS) and BOB WERE SURELY HAPPY (RELIEVED??) TO FINALLY PULL ONE OUT, WINNING AFTER 3 CONSECUTIVE 2nd PLACE FINISHES, 2 OF WHICH WERE ORIGINALLY POSTED AS WINS, ONLY TO HAVE THOSE WINS COME DOWN AND DISSOLVE INTO THOSE 2nd PLACES AFTER LATE SCORE CORRECTIONS.  AND THIS ONE CAME NONE TOO EASILY EITHER.  THEY SCORED 72.40 (57.46%) BUT HOT ON THEIR HEELS WERE HELENE and JOHN, LESS THAN A MEASLE MATCH-POINT AWAY FROM THE BRASS RING W/ 71.67 (56.88%).  THE MOV WAS THUS LESS 1/6 OF A BOARD.  ALSO A VERY TIGHT RACE FOR 3rd PLACE W/ GLORIA and DAUGHTER  PATTI SECURING IT BY EXACTLY 1/4 (.25) OF A MATCH POINT (YES, NOT A QUARTER OF A BOARD BUT AN ACTUAL QUARTER OF A MATCH POINT) OVER THE NEXT CLOSELY PURSUING PAIR W/ A SCORE OF 67.67 (53.71%).  THIS IN THEIR 2nd VISIT TO US.  WELL DONE ALL.

NOW ON TO THE OPEN GAME WHERE GISH and HANK MANAGED TO GET UP AT THE END FOR THEIR FIRST WIN AS A PAIR (AT LEAST IN PIEDMONT) AND HOLD OFF 3 OTHER VERY CLOSELY PURSUING PAIRS, ALL OF WHOM WERE W/IN 3 OR FEWER MATCHPOINTS OF THEM.  WINNERS SCORED 57 (AVERAGE WAS 48, SO THIS WAS 59%).  JIM K. and BLAIR WERE NEXT BEST W/ 55 (57.29%) FOR 2nd PLACE, HALF A BOARD BEHIND THE WINNERS.  SEPARATED BEHIND THEM, ALL BY THE NARROWEST OF MARGINS OF 1/2 (.5) OF A MATCH POINT, WERE 3rd PLACE FINISHERS BMAC (BONNIE MACBRIDE) and SIDNEY, SCORING 54.5 (56.77%) AND WE WERE VERY HAPPY TO SEE BMAC BACK W/ US.  ALSO JAMES SQUARED (SCOTT and HOPKIN) FINISHED 4th W/ SCORE OF 54 (56..25%).  TWO OTHER PAIRS SCRATCHED TONIGHT.  NOT ABLE TO KEEP THEIR 2 GAME WINNING STREAK ALIVE (AND 3 OUT OF THEIR PREVIOUS 5, ALL OF WHICH WERE BY MORE THAN A FULL BOARD AND IN THE MID TO HIGH 60% RANGE) WERE DAVID G. and GLENN WHO HAD TO SETTLE FOR A SCORE OF 48 (AN EVEN AND EXACT 50% GAME, NOT EASY TO ACHIEVE).  IN LOOKING AT THEIR PREVIOUS PERCENTAGES, I NOTICED SOMETHING I NEGLECTED TO MENTION IN PREVIOUS BLOG WAS THAT 2 WEEKS PRIOR TO THE FIRST OF THOSE 3 MID TO HIGH 60% GAMES, THEY ACTUALLY ACHIEVED 70% IN ANOTHER BIG WIN, IN FACT THE JUNE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.  PRETTY HOT RUN FOR THEM RIGHT ABOUT NOW. ALSO SCRATCHING (AGAIN) WERE LILI and MARCIA WHOSE 45 (47%) EARNED THEM 2nd PLACE IN STRAT C.  WELL DONE (AGAIN).

NO FIRST TIMERS W/ US TONIGHT BUT MUCH THANKS AGAIN TO CONNIE FOR COMING TO FILL IN AND SURVIVE ANOTHER SESSION W/ THE (TACKLING) DUMMY, THUS SAVING US (YET AGAIN) FROM A SIT-OUT.

CHECKING THE COUNTY COUNT WE FIND 13 OF OUR 48 PLAYERS ON THIS NIGHT (27%) CAME FROM OUTSIDE ALAMEDA COUNTY, ALL, IN FACT, FROM CONTRA COSTA COUNTY.  THANKS MUCH TO THEM FOR COMING TO PLAY W/ US.

AND FINALLY, MANY THANKS (AGAIN AND ALSO) TO ALL WHO CAME TO PLAY ON THIS NIGHT AND CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO MANAGED TO PAIR LADY LUCK W/ GOOD TECHNIQUE AND THUS SCRATCH.  WE ABSOLUTELY DO HOPE TO SEE ANY AND ALL OF YOU OUT THERE WHO CAN MAKE IT IN TO PLAY AT OUR NEXT GAME, TOMORROW (MONDAY) NIGHT, OK?  TILL THEN, THEN...

Fridays

If you need to phone Doug at Vet's Bldg. (playing site), you can use 510:652-2587 (no voicemail, so it works only after about 7:10 pm--on game nights).

NO FRIDAY GAMES FOR NOW...

SCORES FROM TONIGHT'S (SEPTEMBER 9) GAME ARE POSTED IN THE FAR LEFT COLUMN, AS USUAL, AND THEY WERE POSTED AT 11:45 pm.  (SILLY ME; NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE, I DON'T THINK, BUT SOMEHOW I MANAGED TO FAIL TO INCLUDE BOARD #3 FROM 499er GAME IN ORIGINAL POSTING.  I DID ACTUALLY NOTICE WHEN I GOT HOME AND, IN THE VERY WEE HOURS OF TUESDAY MORNING, WAS TAPING RESULTS INTO RED RECAP NOTEBOOK...HAPPENED TO LOOK AT "AVERAGE" AND SAW THAT IT WAS "60".  I KNEW THAT WASN'T RIGHT...7 TABLES ALWAYS MEANS AVERAGE SHOULD BE "63"...W/ AVERAGE BEING 3 ON EACH OF 21 BOARDS, I REALIZED I MUST HAVE FAILED TO INCLUDE ONE BOARD...SURE ENOUGH, LOOKING THROUGH RESULTS FOR EACH BOARD, I'D SOMEHOW SKIPPED ENTIRELY POSTING ANY RESULTS FOR BOARD #3.  LUCKILY I SAVE TRAVELLERS FOR A FULL WEEK AFTER EACH GAME, FOUND THE ONE FOR BOARD #3, ADDED IT IN, WHICH MADE SOME DIFFERENCE IN EVERYONE'S SCORE...SORRY PEGGY and GAY, YOU LOST YOUR 3rd PLACE FINISH, KAREN and JERRY MOVED UP INTO THAT SPOT; I NEVER GOT ON-LINE ACCESS ALL DAY TUESDAY; JUST NOW, WEDNESDAY MORNING, GOT BACK TO IT AND WAS ABLE TO CHANGE POSTING TO NOW INCLUDE BOARD #3 AND NEW FINAL RESULTS.  ALSO SAW EMAILS FROM JEFF, RICHARD, AND  TOM WHO'D ALL NOTICED MY ERROR AND POINTED IT OUT TO ME...THANKS AND PROPS FOR THAT TO THE 3 OF YOU...AND TO ALL FOR YOUR PATIENCE...AND, AGAIN, BIG MEA CULPA HERE).  NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS (BLOG) NOW POSTED BELOW, SUNDAY LATE AFTERNOON, AS WE SPEAK.

IN THE 499er GAME N/S WINNERS WERE ARTHUR and TOM WHO PUT UP A SCORE OF 76.5 (AVERAGE WAS 63, SO THIS WAS A VERY FINE 61% GAME).  THIS COMPETITION WAS HARDLY CLOSE, AS ONE OTHER PAIR HAD A FINE GAME AS WELL, HELENE and JOHN TAKING 2nd PLACE W/ A SCORE OF 67.5 (54%).  MarginOfVictory PROVED TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY SIZED 1 1/2 BOARDS.  ODDLY ENOUGH, NO OTHER N/S PAIR WAS ABLE TO GET TO 50%, BUT THE GOOD NEWS WAS, NONE OF THEM WERE VERY FAR BENEATH 50% EITHER.  TOP 2 PAIRS INHALED ALL THE MATCHPOINTS ABOVE 50%, WHILE THE OTHER 5 PAIRS SPLIT THE REMAINING POINTS BENEATH 50% AMONG THEMSELVES W/OUT ANY OF THEM REALLY CRASHING AND BURNING AT ALL.  AND WE CAN ALSO RECOGNIZE THAT IT TOOK GRIT AND PERSEVERANCE FOR KAREN and JERRY TO FINISH JUST AHEAD OF THE REST TO MANAGE 3rd PLACE, AS NOTED ABOVE, W/ A SCORE OF 61.5 (49%).

E/W FIELD WAS ABSOLUTELY OBLITERATED THIS TIME BY DRM (MAROLYN) and RICHARD WHO PROVED BEST IN THE ROOM ON THIS NIGHT W/ A SCORE OF 85 (67%).  (WHOA!...TOP NOTCH.)  2nd PLACE WENT TO ELAINE and ARNITA W/ A SCORE OF 67 (53%).  MOV WAS A WHOPPING 3 FULL BOARDS, EXACTLY.  IN 3rd PLACE WERE J-NICE (JANIS) and BOB WHO KEPT ALIVE AND EXTENDED THEIR STREAK OF CONSECUTIVE GAMES OF HAVING SCRATCHED TO, NOW, 11.  NOW THAT'S IMPRESSIVE!!

ALSO WANT TO TAKE TIME TO THANK ALL 4 MEMBERS OF THE HELENE/JOHN AS WELL AS THE J-NICE/BOB PAIRS FOR BEING FLEXIBLE AND GRACIOUS ENOUGH AT GAME TIME TO BE WILLING TO SWITCH DIRECTIONS, THE FORMER MOVING FROM E/W TO N/S, THE LATTER MAKING THE VICE-VERSA MOVE, SO AS TO IMPROVE THE STRATIFICATION AND MAKE IT A FAIRER GAME FOR ALL.

NOW ON TO THE OPEN SECTION WHERE THE RACE FOR THE BRASS RING PRIZE COULDN'T HAVE BEEN CLOSER W/ HANK and GISH EEKING OUT THEIR 2nd CONSECUTIVE VICTORY W/ A SCORE OF 59.5 (AVERAGE WAS 48, THUS 61.98%) OVER 2nd PLACERS ANNE and SIDNEY WHOSE 59 (61.46%) LEFT A MERE AND MEASLE 1/2 POINT MOV (ALL OF 1/8 OF A BOARD).  3rd PLACE WENT TO SUE ELTRINGHAM and DAVID G. SCORING 54.5 (57%).  4th PLACE WERE ISAAC and HARRY, FRESHLY RETURNED FROM TRAVELS TO SCORE 51.5 (54%), DOING SO, AS USUAL, AS THE PAIR W/ PRETTY SIGNIFICANTLY THE LOWEST COMBINED MASTERPOINT TOTAL OF ANYONE IN THIS SECTION.  ALONG THOSE SAME LINES, ALSO SCRATCHING (AGAIN, 4th CONSECUTIVE WEEK), THE PAIR W/ THE 2nd LOWEST COMBINED MASTERPOINT TOTAL IN THE SECTION, MARCIA and LILI SCORING 47 (49%) TO GAIN 3rd PLACE IN STRAT B.  WELL DONE, ALL.

WE DID HAVE ONE FIRST-TIMER W/ US THIS WEEK, A VERY CONGENIAL FELLOW, MIKE LUBIN, WHO ACTUALLY LIVES JUST A SHORT HOP, SKIP, AND JUMP FROM OUR VETS' BUILDING LOCATION.  HE HAD BEGUN PLAYING A FEW YEARS BACK W/ HIS WIFE UNTIL SHE BECAME ILL AND WAS NO LONGER ABLE TO PLAY.  MIKE WAS MOST UNFORTUNATE TO HAVE LOST HER WHEN SHE PASSED SOME MONTHS BACK, BUT HAS NOW DECIDED TO REACH OUT BY RESUMING TO PLAY THE GAME THEY HAD PURSUED TOGETHER.  IN THIS REGARD, WE WERE FORTUNATE HE CHOSE TO RESUME PLAYING W/ US AND HE AND BERT SEEMED TO GET ALONG WELL AND MAY HAVE BEGUN TO FORM A PARTNERSHIP (I THINK THEY'RE SCHEDULED TO PLAY TOGETHER AGAIN TOMORROW NIGHT).  SO WELCOME ABOARD MIKE

CHECKING THE COUNTY COUNT ON THIS NIGHT, WE FIND 15 OUT OF OUR 48 PLAYERS (31%) COMING TO PLAY W/ US FROM OUTSIDE ALAMEDA COUNTY (WHERE VETS' BLDG. PLAYING SITE SITS), MOST ALL CONTRA COSTANS, SAVE ONE (HARRY, FROM MARIN).  THANKS MUCH TO ALL OF YOU.

AND OF COURSE, THANKS, AS ALWAYS, TO CONNIE AND LO-IE (LOISFOR COMING ON DOWN WHEN CALLED AT GAME TIME TO FILL IN FOR US (TO AVOID ANY SIT OUTS).

AND, AS ALWAYS, THANKS ALSO TO ALL OF YOU CAME TO PLAY TONIGHT AND CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO PLAYED WELL ENOUGH (AND/OR HAD ENOUGH OF LADY'S LUCK) TO SCRATCH...WELL DONE.  MUCH LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING Y'ALL WHO CAN MAKE IT TO PLAY W/ US 2-MORROW NIGHT.  TILL THEN...
