Wednesdays

No Wednesday games for now.  If you would be interested in a Swiss Team Game or a Limited Pairs Game (499er, 299er, 199er, etc.) or a Limited Swiss Team Game, or any other type of game on Wednesday evenings, please speak to me (Doug) about it.  Or also please feel free to email me (dough0918@aol.com) or phone me (925:938-4493) about it (or about anything else, really).  If I can sense there is enough interest in a Wednesday game to make it work, we could certainly have one.

RESULTS FROM TONIGHT'S GAME (MARCH 11) POSTED HERE (ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THIS PAGE) @ 11:30 pm.  NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS (BLOG) ARE HEREBY (SATURDAY AFTERNOON) POSTED BELOW.

LET'S BEGIN (AGAIN, AS WE DID LAST WEEK AND AS WE WILL THIS COMING WEEK) BY REMINDING YOU THAT NOT THIS COMING WEEK (MARCH 18, 2 NIGHTS FROM THIS WRITING), BUT RATHER THE WEEK AFTER THAT (MARCH 25) WILL BE OUR QUARTERLY CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP, AWARDING 2 AND 3 TIMES THE TYPICAL AMOUNTS OF MASTER-POINTS TO THOSE WHO PLAY WELL ENOUGH TO SCRATCH.  ANY AND ALL CAN (AND ARE MOST WELCOME TO COME) PLAY AND THERE WILL BE NOTHING ELSE DIFFERENT THAN USUAL ABOUT THESE GAMES (INCLUDING SAME TABLE FEES AS ALWAYS, SAME FREE PLAYS AWARDED TO WINNERS, AS USUAL).

ON THIS NIGHT, IN THE 499er GAME, N/S, A TRULY DOMINTING PERFORMANCE (BEST IN THE ROOM) FROM AMA and HELEN B. WHO PUT UP A SCORE OF 52 (AVERAGE WAS 40, SO THIS CRUNCHES OUT TO A MASSIVE 65%).  OF COURSE THIS WAS MOST FITTING SINCE THE PREVIOUS TIME THEY'D PLAYED (2 WEEKS PRIOR) THEY HAD LEFT AND GONE HOME THINKING THEY'D SCRATCHED AS FIRST EDITION OF FINAL RESULTS AND RANKINGS CLEARLY SHOWED...ONLY TO FIND THE NEXT DAY THAT THERE HAD BEEN A SCORING CORRECTION AFTER THEY'D LEFT (SOMEONE, NOT THEM, HAD SCORED ONE BOARD ON THE WRONG LINE, MEANING ALL POSTED RESULTS ON THAT BOARD EXCEPT FOR ONE TABLE WERE INCORRECT).  AND, WOULDN'T YOU KNOW, THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIRS, THEY SUDDENLY HAD NO LONGER SCRATCHED.  THIS TIME THEIR SCORE WAS SO BIG THAT, EVEN HAD THERE BEEN A LATE SCORE CORRECTION, THEY ALMOST SURELY WOULD HAVE WON ANYWAY (AND, AS IT HAPPENED, THERE WERE NONE).  2nd PLACE PAIR WAS PEGGY and GAY WHOSE 47 (59%) LEFT THE WINNERS W/ A MarginOfVictory OF 1 1/4 BOARDS.  ALSO SCRATCHING WERE ARTHUR and TOM G. WHOSE 44.5 (56%) EARNED THEM 2nd PLACE IN STRAT B.  WELL DONE, ALL.

E/W WINNERS, FOR THE 2nd TIME IN 3 WEEKS, WERE ELAINE and ARNITA (AND THEY WERE 2nd THE WEEK IN BETWEEN).  ON THIS NIGHT THEY SCORED 49.5 (62%).  2nd PLACE WENT TO CONNIE and BOB J. W/ A SCORE OF 45.5 (57%).  THIS PROVIDED THE WINNERS W/ A COMFORTABLE MOV OF EXACTLY ONE FULL BOARD.

TURNING TO THE OPEN GAME THE SHOCKING NEWS WAS THAT LISA and FOSTER DID NOT WIN.  THIS WEEK THAT ACHIEVEMENT WAS EARNED BY RUSS and SIDNEY, THE FORMER HAPPENING TO BE IN TOWN ON THE SAME NIGHT THAT THE LATTER RETURNED TO US AFTER HIS 3-WEEK CRUISE.  THEY SCORED 55 (AVERAGE WAS 48, SO THIS TRANSLATES TO 57%).  AND THEY MANAGED TO WIN BY ALL OF EXACTLY ONE MATCH-POINT (MOV OF 1/4 BOARD)...OVER, YOU GUESSED IT, LISA and FOSTER, WHO THUS HAD THEIR WINNING STREAK BROKEN AT 2, BUT THAT STREAK WAS SANDWICHED BY 2 2nd PLACE FINISHES THE WEEKS BEFORE AND AFTER...AND THIS ALSO KEPT ALIVE AND STRETCHED THEIR REMARKABLE (OTHER) STREAK TO 10 CONSECUTIVE SCRATCHES.  THEIR SCORE OF 54 WAS GOOD FOR 56%.  3rd PLACE WENT TO THE GOOD DOCS (COURTENAY and ANDY) WHOSE SCORE OF 52 CLOCKED IN AT 54%.  SARLA and AMY EARNED 4th PLACE MONEY (THEIR 2nd SCRATCH IN 3 WEEKS) W/ A SCORE OF 50 (52%).

NO ACTUAL FIRST-TIMERS TONIGHT BUT IT WAS GOOD TO SEE BOTH MELINDA and BILL W. AGAIN AFTER LONG ABSENCES.  IN BILL's CASE HE'D BEEN BATTLING RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS FOR QUITE SOME TIME, BUT SOMEHOW FOUND A MAGICAL DOCTOR WHO WAS ABLE TO GIVE HIM THE RELIEF HE NEEDED, WHICH IN TURN ALLOWED HIM TO BE ABLE TO ENJOY HIS BRIDGE AGAIN.  IN MELINDA's CASE, WELL, FORTUNATELY NO SUCH PROBLEMS FOR HER, BUT SHE WAS HAPPY TO PARTNER W/ HER GOOD NEIGHOR BILL ONCE HE WAS WELL ENOUGH TO PLAY AGAIN.  A-A-AND, I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO LEARN (A FEW DAYS LATER) THAT SHE HAD JUST, THAT DAY, BECOME A FIRST-TIME GRANDMA (IS SHE REALLY OLD ENOUGH FOR THAT??), PROUDLY DISPLAYING THE PIC OF THE NEWBORN BOY.

ALSO WE WANT TO GIVE OUR HEARTIEST THANKS AGAIN TO CONNIE FOR FILLING IN (AGAIN), MOST ABLY (AGAIN), TO WHICH PARTNER BOB J. WILL HAPPILY ATTEST (AGAIN).  ALSO DIRECTING ALL OF (ALL) OUR GRATITUDE (AGAIN) TO KAREN and JERRY FOR BEING WILLING AND FLEXIBLE ENOUGH TO SWITCH OVER AT GAME-TIME INTO THE OPEN SECTION TO RECTIFY THE HALF-TABLE IN EACH SECTION AT THAT POINT, THUS ENSURING NO SIT-OUTS FOR ANYONE IN EITHER SECTION.  BIG UPPS TO ALL 3 OF THESE FINE TROOPERS AND TEAM-PLAYERS.

COUNTY COUNT ON THIS NIGHT (REVISED TWICE, AS I'LL MENTION IN A MOMENT) LOOKS TO SHOW 9 OF 44 PLAYERS (20%) JOINED US FROM OUTSIDE ALAMEDA COUNTY, THE FURTHEST TRAVELING OF WHICH WOULD BE NICK RAU WHO JOINED US (AS HE SEEMS TO DO ABOUT ONCE/DECADE) HAVING COME ALL THE WAY FROM NEUCHATEL, SWITZERLAND TO DO SO.  GOOD TO SEE HIM AGAIN.  ALSO, I AGAIN LEARNED (2nd TIME IN THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS) JUST NOW THAT I HAD BEEN COUNTING AS ALAMEDA COUNTIANS NOT ONE, BUT ACTUALLY 2 OF OUR MOST REGULAR PLAYERS FROM EL CERRITO, WHICH (I JUST NOW LOOKED IT UP ONLY TO FIND THAT FINE CITY) IS ACTUALLY IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, SO WELCOME (NOW) TO YOUR RIGHTFUL PLACE IN THE COUNT AS CONTRA COSTANS, ARTHUR AND JIM SCOTT, THE LATTER OF WHOM ALSO HAPPENS TO BE ONE OF OUR LONGEST-TENURED PLAYERS.  SO MY PREVIOUS COUNTS HAD BEEN MOSTLY ABOUT 3-4 PLAYERS LOW ON THE NON-ALAMEDA COUNTY SIDE.  I'M THINKING FUTURE (MORE ACCURATE) COUNTS WILL SHOW GENERALLY 20% AND UP VISITING US FROM OUTSIDE THE COUNTY IN WHICH OUR PIEDMONT PLAYING SITE SITS.  IF I LEARNED SOMETHING NEW (SUCH AS THIS) EVERY DAY, WHAT A BLESSING THAT WOULD BE!!

IN ANY CASE, MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO CAME IN TO PLAY AND CONGRATS TO ALL WHO SCRATCHED.  SO WE'LL MUCH LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING AS MANY OF Y'ALL AS CAN MAKE IT IN 2 NIGHTS FROM NOW, MONDAY (MARCH 18), OF COURSE.  TILL THEN...

Fridays

If you need to phone Doug at Vet's Bldg. (playing site), you can use 510:652-2587 (no voicemail, so it works only after about 7:10 pm--on game nights).  NO FRIDAY GAMES FOR NOW...

SCORES FROM TONIGHT'S (MARCH 18) GAME ARE POSTED IN THE FAR LEFT COLUMN, AS USUAL, AND THEY WERE PUT UP @ 11:25 pm.  NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS (BLOG) WILL BE POSTED HERE LATER IN THE WEEK.  BUT FOR NOW, AS ALWAYS, WE'LL LEAVE THE BLOG FROM 2 WEEKS AGO BELOW FOR LACK OF ANYTHING BETTER TO DO W/ THE SPACE.  THANKS MUCH FOR YOUR PATIENCE IN THIS...

OH, FIRST, LET'S GET IN THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT BARELY 2 WEEKS FROM THE DAY I'M WRITING THIS WILL BE OUR QUARTERLY CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP IN BOTH SECTIONS...ANY AND ALL CAN AND SHOULD PLAY...NO ONE WILL NOTICE ANY DIFFERENCE IN THE GAMES THAT NIGHT (MONDAY MARCH 25) UNLESS OR UNTIL YOU SCRATCH (WIN MASTER POINTS), IN WHICH CASE YOU'LL BE HAPPY TO FIND THAT THOSE AWARDS WILL BE 2 AND 3 TIMES GREATER THAN USUAL, FOR ANY NON-CLUB-CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.  SO MARK YOUR CALENDAR, SAVE THE DATE (SAVE ALL MONDAY NIGHTS, REALLY, BUT ESPECIALLY SAVE THAT ONE)...

IN THE 499er GAME ON THIS NIGHT, NO ONE BLEW THE DOORS OFF (HAD REALLY BIG GAME) BUT THEN NO ONE HAD SUCH A BAD GAME THAT THEY WERE NEVER IN CONTENTION EITHER.  PARTICULARLY N/S DIRECTION WAS A REMARKABLY CLOSE RACE W/ ALL 6 PAIRS W/IN 4.5 POINTS (BARELY MORE THAN ONE FULL BOARD) OF EACH OTHER, MEANING ANY SINGLE PLAY THAT ANYONE MIGHT HAVE MADE DIFFERENTLY COULD HAVE CHANGED THE LOWEST SCORE TO THE WINNING SCORE...AND VICE VERSA!  ANOTHER WAY TO LOOK AT IT WOULD BE TO SEE THAT THE 3 HIGHEST SCORES WERE SEPARATED BY A MERE 1.5 MATCHPOINTS...AND THE OTHER 3 SCORES WERE SEPARATED FROM EACH OTHER BY ONLY 0.5 POINTS!!  AND, AGAIN, ALL 6 WERE SEPARATED BY ONLY 4.5 POINTS.  DON'T THINK I REMEMBER EVER HAVING SEEN SUCH AN OCCURRENCE BEFORE.

THE WINNERS, FOR THE 2nd WEEK IN A ROW (AND THE 4th TIME IN THEIR PAST 6 499er GAMES) WERE KAREN and JERRY W/ A SCORE OF 42.5 (AVERAGE WAS 40, SO THIS WAS 53%).  QUITE RARE IS IT FOR A WINNING PERCENTAGE TO BE SO LOW, BUT...NO OTHER N/S PAIR SCORED HIGHER AND THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS.  TAKING 2nd PLACE HERE WERE CONNIE and BOB J. WHOSE SCORE WAS 41.5 (52%).  MarginOfVictory WAS THEREFORE A MEASLE SINGLE-POINT.

THE DISTRIBUTION OF E/W SCORES WAS NOT QUITE SO DRAMATIC, YET STILL UNUSUALLY CLOSE AND TIGHTLY CLUSTERED.  EMERGING VICTORIOUS FROM THE PACK WERE TOM G. and ARTHUR W/ A SCORE OF 46.5 (58%). 2nd PLACE, BY QUITE A BIG MARGIN ACTUALLY, WERE ARNITA and ELAINE WHO SCORED 45 (56%), AN MOV FOR THE WINNERS OF 3/8 OF A FULL BOARD, PRETTY CLOSE.  ODDLY, THERE WAS YET ANOTHER ANOMOLY HERE, AS THE REMAINING 4 SCORES WERE ALL 6.5 OR MORE POINTS LOWER, MARGIN OF MORE THAN 1.5 BOARDS, THAN EITHER OF THESE TOP 2 (AND 8 OR MORE POINTS, MARGIN OF 2 OR MORE FULL BOARDS, BEHIND THE WINNERS), YET ALL 4 OF THOSE WERE WITHIN 2.5 POINTS, LITTLE MORE THAN HALF A BOARD, OF EACH OTHER.  OK, OK, SORRY TO BORE YOU IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT SUCH MINUTIAE, BUT SOMEHOW MY WEIRD BRAIN FINDS THIS FASCINATING!

MOVING NOW TO THE OPEN GAME, WINNERS WERE AGAIN (2nd CONSECUTIVE WEEK...NOT TO MENTION THAT THEY WERE ALSO 2nd THE WEEK BEFORE THAT, MISSING ANOTHER VICTORY THAT TIME BY THE SLIMMEST OF MARGINS, 0.5 POINTS), IF YOU GUESSED LISA and FOSTER YOU NAILED IT.  THIS (STRAT C, I MIGHT ADD) PAIR SCORED 57 (AVERAGE WAS 48, SO THIS BEAN-COUNTED OUT TO BE 59%, BEST IN THE ROOM ON THIS NIGHT).  MORE ABOUT THIS PAIR AND THEIR RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN A BIT, BUT FOR NOW LET'S SCROLL ALONG TO THE NEXT BEST SCORE HERE AND IT (AND 2nd PLACE) BELONGED TO ANNE and DAVEY C. WHOSE SCORE OF 53.5 (55.73%) LEFT THE WINNERS W/ AN MOV OF JUST UNDER A MORE THAN COMFORTABLE FULL BOARD.  THIS 2nd PLACE SCORE WAS ALSO THE BEST BY THE SLIMMEST OF MARGINS OF THE 4 SCORES CLOSEST TO THE WINNERS, ONLY 3 OF WHICH WERE ABLE TO SCRATCH.  IT WAS, GET USED TO THIS, A MEASLE HALF-POINT BETTER THAN THAT OF THE 3rd PLACE PAIR, HARRY and ISAAC's 53 (55.21%)...WHICH WAS, IN TURN, ANOTHER MEASLE HALF-POINT BETTER THAN THE 4th PLACE PAIR GISH and (THE REAL) DOUG WHOSE 52.5 (54.69%) WAS, YEP, YOU GUESSED IT, YET ANOTHER MEASLE HALF POINT BETTER THAN THAT OF THE PAIR WHO WAS THAT CLOSE, YET BY ONLY THAT BARE MARGIN FAILED TO SCRATCH (SHOULD I NAME THEM HERE?  OK, IT WAS GLENN and DAVID G.).

BACK NOW TO LISA and FOSTER FOR ANOTHER MOMENT MORE...NOT SURE HOW MANY OF YOU NOTICE, BUT I PRINT AND LAY ON THE STAGE, ON THE LEFT, NEXT TO THE SUPPLIES, CONVENTION CARDS, RECAP BOOK, ETC. (WHEN I GET TO IT, WHICH I TRY TO DO AS SOON AT THE END OF EACH MONTH AS POSSIBLE) THE LIST OF MASTER-POINT WINNERS FOR EACH MONTH, LISTED IN ORDER OF THE MOST POINTS WON.  LISA and FOSTER ARE ATOP THAT LIST FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY...AND THEY WERE 2nd ONLY TO GISH ON JANUARY'S LIST.  I ALSO HAPPENED TO NOTICE THAT THEY HAVE NOW SCRATCHED A RATHER REMARKABLE 9 CONSECUTIVE WEEKS; I ALMOST DIDN'T WANT TO MENTION THAT FOR FEAR OF JINXING THEM, BUT THEY HAVE BEEN SO CONSISTENT, I DECIDED I'D RATHER MAKE IT KNOWN AND CELEBRATE IT RATHER THAN WORRY ABOUT ANY SUCH JINX...EVEN IF IT WERE TO HAPPEN THAT THEY MISSED SCRATCHING ANY WEEK SOON, THEY'VE BEEN CONSISTENT ENOUGH THAT I'M PRETTY SURE THEY'D LIKELY START A NEW STREAK SOON ANYWAY.

OK, NO FIRST-TIMERS THIS WEEK, BUT I ANTICIPATE A VISIT TOMORROW NIGHT FROM SOMEONE WHO SAYS HE PLAYED W/ US 9 OR 10 YEARS AGO (SINCE I DELETED MY DATA BASE, FOOLISHLY, ACCIDENTALLY, 4 YEARS AGO NOW AND SINCE MY MEMORY IS NO HELP ON THIS ONE, I CAN'T LOOK IT UP AND REFRESH).  HE'S SWISS AND THUS NOT IN THIS COUNTRY VERY OFTEN, I SUPPOSE, BUT I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO HIS ANNOUNCED VISIT TOMORROW.

COUNTY COUNT ON THIS NIGHT, I'M FINDING 7 OF 44 PLAYERS (16%) CAME TO PLAY FROM OUTSIDE ALAMEDA COUNTY (6 CONTRA COSTANS, ONE MARINITE).  MANY THANKS TO THEM FOR MAKING THE TRIP AND SHOWING UP.  ALSO MUST SHOUT OUT TO CONNIE FOR AGAIN (AND OH, SO WELL) COMING IN TO FILL IN FOR US ON THIS NIGHT.

THANKS AS ALWAYS TO ALL WHO CAME TO PLAY ON THIS NIGHT AND WE'LL LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING AS MANY OF Y'ALL AS CAN MAKE IT TOMORROW NIGHT...TILL THEN...
